A power assist device for a vehicle includes a door is pivotally coupled to a vehicle body. A hinge assembly is coupled between the vehicle body and the door to define a hinge axis for the door. A motor is coupled to the door and includes a drive shaft extending outwardly from the motor. A first spool is disposed on the drive shaft for rotation therewith. A second spool is mounted on the hinge assembly at a spool axle. A cable is operably couples the first spool to the second spool and the motor is configured to drive the first spool in a rotational movement, and the cable is configured to translate the rotational movement of the first spool to the second spool. The movement of the second spool drives an opening and closing movement of the door at the hinge axis of the hinge assembly.

What is claimed is: 1. A power assist device for a vehicle, comprising: a door pivotally coupled to a vehicle body, the door having a door panel; a hinge assembly coupled between the vehicle body and the door to define a hinge axis for the door; a motor coupled to the door panel having a drive shaft extending outwardly therefrom; a first spool disposed on the drive shaft for rotation therewith as powered by the motor; a second spool mounted on the hinge assembly at a spool axle; and a cable operably coupling the first spool to the second spool, wherein the motor is configured to drive the first spool in a rotational movement and the cable is configured to translate the rotational movement of the first spool to the second spool, and further wherein the movement of the second spool drives an opening and closing movement of the door at the hinge axis. 2. The power assist device of claim 1 , wherein the first spool includes a bearing on a first side thereof. 3. The power assist device of claim 2 , wherein the motor is disposed adjacent to a second side of the first spool. 4. The power assist device of claim 3 , wherein the first spool includes a continuous spiral channel disposed between the first and second sides for guiding the cable during the rotational movement of the first spool. 5. The power assist device of claim 4 , wherein the second spool includes a continuous spiral channel disposed between first and second sides thereof for guiding the cable during rotational movement of the second spool. 6. The power assist device of claim 5 , wherein the cable includes first and second ends coupled to the second spool at first and second eyelets disposed on the second spool. 7. A power assist device for a vehicle, comprising: a motor mounted to a vehicle door and configured to rotationally drive a first spool; a second spool mounted on a hinge assembly of the door; and a cable coupled between the first and second spools to translate rotational movement of the first spool to the second spool for further driving movement of the door at the hinge assembly by the second spool. 8. The power assist device of claim 7 , wherein the first spool is disposed on a drive shaft extending outwardly from the motor. 9. The power assist device of claim 8 , wherein the first spool includes a bearing disposed on a first side thereof to define a first bearing point. 10. The power assist device of claim 9 , wherein the motor is disposed adjacent to a second side of the first spool to define a second bearing point. 11. The power assist device of claim 10 , wherein the first spool includes a radius that is less than a radius of the second spool, thereby defining an increased amplification ratio therebetween. 12. The power assist device of claim 8 , wherein the first spool includes a continuous spiral channel disposed between first and second sides thereof for guiding the cable during the rotational movement of the first spool. 13. The power assist device of claim 12 , wherein the second spool includes a continuous spiral channel disposed between first and second sides thereof for guiding the cable during rotational movement of the second spool. 14. The power assist device of claim 7 , wherein the second spool is disposed on a spool axle extending outwardly from the hinge assembly. 15. A power assist device for a vehicle, comprising: a door pivotally coupled to a vehicle body at a hinge assembly; a motor mounted within an interior of the door having a first spool; a second spool operably coupled to the hinge assembly; and a cable coupled between the first and second spools, wherein the motor rotationally drives the first spool for translation to a rotation of the second spool by the cable, thereby providing movement of the door at the hinge assembly by the second spool. 16. The power assist device of claim 15 , wherein the first spool is disposed on a drive shaft extending outwardly from the motor. 17. The power assist device of claim 16 , wherein the second spool is disposed on a spool axle extending outwardly from the hinge assembly. 18. The power assist device of claim 17 , wherein the first spool includes a bearing disposed on a first side thereof to define a first bearing point. 19. The power assist device of claim 18 , wherein the motor is disposed adjacent to a second side of the first spool to define a second bearing point. 20. The power assist device of claim 19 , wherein the first spool includes a radius that is less than a radius of the second spool, thereby defining an increased amplification ratio therebetween.
