Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A spinal stabilization system includes a spinal rod, a plate, a set screw, and a bone screw. The plate includes a throughhole transitionable between a collapsed and expanded configuration, and a first slot adapted to receive a spinal rod therein. The set screw includes a distal portion having threads to engage with a threaded lumen of a bone screw, and the bone screw including a head portion transitionable between a first diameter and a second diameter. The head of the bone screw insertable into the throughhole and cooperatively transitions between the first diameter and the collapsed configuration to the second diameter and expanded configuration, respectively, as the set screw advances with respect to the bone screw to lock the spinal rod into the slot of the plate in the second diameter and expanded configuration.

What is claimed is: 1. A spinal stabilization system comprising: a first spinal rod; a bone screw including a head portion, a threaded distal portion extending therefrom, and a threaded lumen disposed distally of the head portion within the threaded distal portion, the head portion transitionable between a first diameter and a second diameter; a plate including a throughhole and a first slot, the first slot transverse to an axis extending through the throughhole, the throughhole transitionable between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration, such that a diameter of the throughhole in the expanded configuration is greater than a diameter of the throughhole in the collapsed configuration; and a set screw including a head portion adapted to receive a driving tool, a distal portion extending therefrom, the distal portion having threads disposed in axial spaced relation relative to the head portion of the set screw for engaging the threaded lumen of the bone screw, and a body portion disposed between the head portion and the threads of the distal portion, the head portion of the bone screw insertable into the throughhole such that rotation of the set screw relative to the bone screw advances the set screw and transitions the head portion of the bone screw towards the second diameter and transitions the throughhole towards the expanded configuration such that a diameter of the first slot decreases for securing the first spinal rod in the first slot, the body portion having a diameter that is smaller than a diameter of the head portion of the set screw such that when the threads of the set screw are initially coupled within the threaded lumen of the bone screw, the body portion of the set screw is received within the head portion of the bone screw and the head portion of the set screw is spaced proximal of the head portion of the bone screw, and when the threads of the set screw are fully coupled with the threaded lumen of the bone screw, the head portion of the set screw is disposed within the head portion of the bone screw to transition the head portion of the bone screw from the first diameter to the second diameter. 2. The spinal stabilization system of claim 1 , wherein the head portion of the bone screw further includes longitudinally extending segments radially disposed about a longitudinal axis of the bone screw, the longitudinally extending segments flexibly transitionable between the first and second diameters of the head portion. 3. The spinal stabilization system of claim 2 , wherein the longitudinally extending segments of the bone screw are biased radially inward. 4. The spinal stabilization system of claim 1 , wherein the plate further includes flexible segments radially disposed about the throughhole, the flexible segments transitionable between collapsed and expanded configurations. 5. The spinal stabilization system of claim 4 , wherein the flexible segments of the plate are biased towards the collapsed configuration. 6. The spinal stabilization system of claim 1 , further including a bone spike disposed on a distal surface of the plate and adapted to penetrate bone. 7. The spinal stabilization system of claim 1 , wherein the plate includes a proximal surface and a distal surface, the first slot defined in the proximal surface and the distal surface of the plate is arcuate. 8. The spinal stabilization system of claim 1 , further including a second spinal rod and a second slot on the plate, the second slot transverse to the axis extending through the throughhole, wherein a diameter of the second slot decreases when the throughhole transitions towards the expanded configuration for securing the second spinal rod in the second slot of the plate. 9. The spinal stabilization system of claim 1 , wherein the body portion of the set screw is unthreaded. 10. A method of stabilizing a spine comprising: providing a first spinal rod; providing a bone screw, the bone screw including a head portion, a threaded distal portion extending therefrom, and a threaded lumen disposed distally of the head portion within the threaded distal portion, the head portion transitionable between a first diameter and a second diameter; providing a plate including a throughhole and a first slot, the first slot transverse to an axis extending through the throughhole, the throughhole transitionable between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration; providing a set screw including a head portion adapted to receive a driving tool, a distal portion extending therefrom, the distal portion having threads disposed in axial spaced relation relative to the head portion of the set screw for engaging the threaded lumen of the bone screw, and a body portion disposed between the head portion and the threads of the distal portion, the head portion of the bone screw insertable into the throughhole such that rotation of the set screw relative to the bone screw advances the set screw and transitions the head portion of the bone screw towards the second diameter and transitions the throughhole towards the expanded configuration such that a diameter of the first slot decreases, the body portion having a diameter that is smaller than a diameter of the head portion of the set screw such that when the threads of the set screw are initially coupled within the threaded lumen of the bone screw, the body portion of the set screw is received within the head portion of the bone screw and the head portion of the set screw is spaced proximal of the head portion of the bone screw, and when the threads of the set screw are fully coupled with the threaded lumen of the bone screw, the head portion of the set screw is disposed within the head portion of the bone screw to transition the head portion of the bone screw from the first diameter to the second diameter; implanting the bone screw into a bone; positioning the head portion of the bone screw in the throughhole of the plate; placing the first spinal rod into the first slot; engaging the threads of the set screw with the threaded lumen of the bone screw; and advancing the set screw with respect to the bone screw such that the diameter of the first slot is reduced thereby securing the first spinal rod in the first slot. 11. The method of claim 10 , further including: providing a second spinal rod, wherein providing the plate includes the plate having a second slot that is parallel to the first slot; and placing the second spinal rod into the second slot; wherein, advancing the set screw with respect to the bone screw thereby secures the second spinal rod in the second slot. 12. The method of claim 11 , further including adjusting a contour of the second spinal rod. 13. The method of claim 10 , further including incrementally advancing the set screw, and realigning the first spinal rod throughout the advancement of the set screw. 14. The method of claim 10 , further including: providing a plurality of bone screws; providing a plurality of plates; implanting the plurality of bone screws in sequence into bone; coupling the plurality of plates to the plurality of bone screws implanted into bone; and securing the first spinal rod within the first slot of each plate of the plurality of plates, such that the first spinal rod spans multiple bones. 15.
