Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Real-time evaluation of high quality preview images of a document prior to capturing a final image of the document on a mobile device is disclosed. In one aspect, an image capture device is activated on the mobile device. A plurality of preview images of the document is then captured, each of which has a lower image quality than a final image to be captured by the image capture device. Next, for each of the plurality of preview images, the system measures a parameter associated with the image capturing, and related to the ability to accurately extract text and other content from a captured preview image of the document. Next, the system selects a preview image among a subset of the captured preview images that passes the image quality measurement. When a predetermined condition is met, the system chooses the selected preview image as a final captured image of the document.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method of capturing and processing an image of a document on a mobile device, comprising: activating an image capture device on the mobile device; capturing a plurality of preview images of the document using the image capture device, wherein the image capture device captures each of the plurality of preview images with a lower image quality than an image quality associated with the image capture device capturing a final image; for each of the plurality of preview images, measuring at least one parameter associated with the capturing of the preview image, wherein the at least one parameter is related to the ability to accurately extract text and other content from a captured preview image of the document based on a confidence level; selecting a preview image among a subset of the plurality of preview images that passes the image quality measurement based on the at least one parameter, wherein the selected preview image is temporarily stored; and when a predetermined condition is met, choosing the temporarily stored preview image as a final selected image of the document. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying visual feedback related to the at least one parameter on the display. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the visual feedback includes a color-changing graphic which changes color as the value of the at least one parameter becomes closer to a threshold value. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein one or more recommendations is provided to help a user adjust the parameters to attain the threshold value. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one measured parameter is selected from at least one of: a position or movement of the mobile device, a lighting level of the image being detected, detection of all four corners of the document, a level of focus of the image being detected, a level of reflection of the document, and a size of the document within the image being detected. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one parameter includes an angle of variance from parallel of the mobile device with respect to the document. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one measured parameter is a steadiness of the mobile device. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one measured parameter is a distance of the mobile device from the document. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected preview images is an image having a dots-per-inch (DPI) value greater than a threshold value. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of preview images is captured over a time period. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined condition includes that a predetermined time has passed. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises transmitting the captured image of the document to a remote server for processing.
