Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

This disclosure describes techniques for generation of sleep quality information based on posture state data. The techniques may include obtaining posture state data sensed by a medical device for a patient, generating sleep quality information based on lying posture state changes indicated by the posture state data, and presenting the sleep quality information to a user via a user interface.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method comprising: delivering therapy, during a time period, via a medical device to a patient in response to determined posture states of the patient, wherein the determined posture states include a plurality of different lying posture states; obtaining, with a computing device, posture state data sensed by the medical device for the patient; generating, with at least one processor of the computing device, sleep quality information based on lying posture state changes indicated by the posture state data, wherein the posture state data indicates lying posture state changes during the time period in which the medical device delivers the therapy to the patient in response to the determined posture states of the patient; and presenting the sleep quality information to a user via a user interface of the computing device. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the medical device comprises an implantable medical device, and wherein obtaining posture state data comprises obtaining the posture state data from the implantable medical device. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the implantable medical device is configured to sense the posture state data, and determine a posture state occupied by the patient based on the posture state data, and deliver electrical stimulation to the patient based on the determined posture state of the patient. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein presenting the sleep quality information further comprises presenting a sleep quality graph that graphically presents the sleep quality information. 5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating the sleep quality information based on a number of changes from the plurality of different lying posture states during the time period. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the sleep quality information comprises generating sleep quality information for each of a plurality of time intervals during the time period, wherein the sleep quality information for each of the time intervals indicates a number of changes from the plurality of different lying posture states during the respective time interval. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating sleep quality information comprises generating the sleep quality information based on the lying posture state changes indicated by the posture state data, and wherein the sleep quality information indicates a number of changes from each of the plurality of different lying posture states during the time period. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the number of changes includes a daily average number of the changes over the time interval, and wherein the time interval is one of a week, a month, a year, or a time between successive programming sessions for the medical device. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sleep quality information indicates a number of changes from each of the plurality of different lying posture states during the time period, and wherein the number of changes is one of a number of changes from each of the lying posture states to a different one of the lying posture states or a number of changes from each of the lying posture states. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sleep quality information indicates a number of changes from each of the plurality of different lying posture states to each of the other lying posture states in the plurality of different lying posture states during the time period. 11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating the sleep quality information based on a number of changes from the plurality of different lying posture states during the time period, wherein the lying posture states include a lying front posture state, a lying back posture state, a lying right posture state, and a lying left posture state. 12. A system comprising: a medical device configured to deliver therapy to a patient; at least one processor that controls the medical device to deliver, during a time period, the therapy to the patient in response to determined posture states of the patient, wherein the determined posture states include a plurality of different lying posture states, obtains posture state data sensed by the medical device for the patient, and generates sleep quality information based on lying posture state changes indicated by the posture state data; and a user interface that presents the sleep quality information to a user, wherein the posture state data indicates lying posture state changes during the time period in which the medical device delivers the therapy to the patient in response to the determined posture states of the patient. 13. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a telemetry interface, wherein the medical device comprises an implantable medical device, and the at least one processor is configured to obtain the posture state data from the implantable medical device via the telemetry interface. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the system further comprises the implantable medical device and a programmer for the implantable medical device, the programmer includes the at least one processor and the user interface, and the implantable medical device is configured to sense the posture state data, determine a posture state occupied by the patient based on the posture state data, and deliver electrical stimulation to the patient based on the determined posture state of the patient. 15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the sleep quality information presented by the user interface comprises a sleep quality graph that graphically presents the sleep quality information. 16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one processor generates the sleep quality information based on a number of changes from the plurality of different lying posture states during the time period. 17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one processor generates sleep quality information for each of a plurality of time intervals during the time period, wherein the sleep quality information for each of the time intervals indicates a number of changes from the plurality of different lying posture states during the respective time interval. 18. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one processor generates the sleep quality information based on the lying posture state changes indicated by the posture state data, and wherein the sleep quality information indicates a number of changes from each of the plurality of different lying posture states during the time period. 19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the number of changes includes a daily average number of the changes over the time period, and wherein the time period is one of a week, a month, a year, or a time between successive programming sessions for the medical device. 20. The system of claim 12 , wherein the sleep quality information indicates a number of changes from each of the plurality of different lying posture states during the time period, and wherein the number of changes is one of a number of changes from each of the lying posture states to a different one of the lying posture states or a number of changes from each of the lying posture states. 21. The system of claim 12 , wherein the sleep quality information indicates a number of changes from each of the plurality of different lying posture states to each of the other lying posture states in the plurality of different lying posture states during the time period. 22. The system of claim 21 , wherein the at least one processor generates the sleep quality information based on a num
