Official abstract text for this publication.
In a method for generating a data unit for transmission via a communication channel, wherein the data unit conforms to a first communication protocol, a preamble of the data unit is generated. The preamble includes a first field having information that indicates a duration of the data unit, the first field being formatted such that the first field is decodable by a receiver device that conforms to a second communication protocol but does not conform to the first communication protocol to determine the duration of the data unit based on the first field. Additionally, the preamble is formatted such that a portion of the preamble is decodable by a receiver device that conforms to a third communication protocol but does not conform to the first communication protocol. Also, the preamble is formatted such that a receiver device that conforms to the first communication protocol can determine that the data unit conforms to the first communication protocol. A data portion of the data unit that conforms to the first communication protocol and does not conform to either (i) the second communication protocol or (ii) the third communication protocol is generated.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for generating a data unit for transmission via a communication channel, the data unit conforming to a first communication protocol, the method comprising: generating, at a first communication device, a preamble to be included in the data unit, wherein the preamble includes a first field having information that indicates a duration of the data unit, the first field being formatted such that the first field is decodable by a receiver device that conforms to a second communication protocol but does not conform to the first communication protocol to determine the duration of the data unit based on the first field, the preamble is formatted such that a portion of the preamble is decodable by a receiver device that conforms to a third communication protocol but does not conform to the first communication protocol, and the preamble includes a second field having a first orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol and a second OFDM symbol, wherein the second field is a signal (SIG) field specifying physical layer (PHY) information about the data unit, the first OFDM symbol (i) immediately follows the first field and (ii) is modulated using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation to cause the receiver device that conforms to the third communication protocol to fail detection that the data unit conforms to the third communication protocol, and the second OFDM symbol (i) immediately follows the first OFDM symbol and (ii) is modulated using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation rotated by 90 degrees (Q-BPSK) with respect to the modulation of the first OFDM symbol to indicate to a receiver device that conforms to the first communication protocol that the data unit conforms to the first communication protocol; generating, at the first communication device, a data portion to be included in the data unit that conforms to the first communication protocol and does not conform to either (i) the second communication protocol or (ii) the third communication protocol; and generating, at the first communication device, the data unit to include at least the preamble and the data portion, the data unit configured for transmission via the communication channel; and transmitting, with the first communication device, the generated data unit via the communication channel. 2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the portion of the preamble that is decodable by the receiver device that conforms to the third communication protocol but does not conform to the first communication protocol includes the first field, and wherein the first field is formatted such that the first field is decodable by the receiver device that conforms to the third communication protocol but does not conform to the first communication protocol to determine the duration of the data unit based on the first field. 3. A method according to claim 2 , wherein the first field of the preamble includes a rate subfield and a length subfield that indicate the duration of the data unit. 4. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the second field of the preamble includes a subfield that is set to a value that contradicts the third communication protocol. 5. A method according to claim 4 , wherein the subfield that is set to the value that contradicts the third communication protocol indicates to the receiver device that conforms to the third communication protocol to wait until the energy of the data unit drops out before switching to a clear channel assessment (CCA) mode. 6. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the second field of the preamble includes information that indicates the duration of the data unit, and wherein the portion of the preamble that is decodable by the receiver device that conforms to the third communication protocol but does not conform to the first communication protocol includes the second field. 7. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the second field of the preamble is modulated using a modulation different than specified by the third communication protocol. 8. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the data portion includes data for only a single receiver device. 9. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the data portion includes independent data for a plurality of receiver devices. 10. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the data portion has a cumulative bandwidth greater than a bandwidth specified by the second communication protocol and a maximum bandwidth specified by the third communication protocol. 11. An apparatus, comprising: a wireless local area network (WLAN) physical layer (PHY) unit associated with a first communication device, the WLAN PHY unit having one or more integrated circuit devices configured to: generate a preamble to be included in a data unit that conforms to a first communication protocol, wherein the preamble includes a first field having information that indicates a duration of the data unit, the first field being formatted such that the first field is decodable by a receiver device that conforms to a second communication protocol but does not conform to the first communication protocol to determine the duration of the data unit based on the first field, the preamble is formatted such that a portion of the preamble is decodable by a receiver device that conforms to a third communication protocol but does not conform to the first communication protocol, and the preamble includes a second field having a first orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol and a second OFDM symbol, wherein the second field is a signal (SIG) field specifying physical layer (PHY) information about the data unit, the first OFDM symbol (i) immediately follows the first field and (ii) is modulated using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation to cause the receiver device that conforms to the third communication protocol to fail detection that the data unit conforms to the third communication protocol, and the second OFDM symbol (i) immediately follows the first OFDM symbol and (ii) is modulated using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation rotated by 90 degrees (Q-BPSK) with respect to the modulation of the first OFDM symbol to indicate to a receiver device that conforms to the first communication protocol that the data unit conforms to the first communication protocol; generate a data portion to be included in the data unit that conforms to the first communication protocol and does not conform to either (i) the second communication protocol or (ii) the third communication protocol; and generate the data unit to include at least the preamble and the data portion, the data unit configured for transmission via a communication channel, wherein the WLAN PHY unit includes one or more transceivers, implemented on the one or more integrated circuits, wherein the one or more transceivers transmits the generated data unit via the communication channel. 12. An apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the portion of the preamble that is decodable by the receiver device that conforms to the third communication protocol but does not conform to the first communication protocol includes the first field, and wherein the first field is formatted such that the first field is decodable by the receiver device that conforms to the third communication protocol but does not conform to the first communication protocol to determine the duration of the data unit based on the first field. 13.
