What is claimed is: 1. A process comprising: melting a polyol; and reacting the molten polyol, a carbonyl compound and hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to produce a polyol ether of formula I wherein R 1 is (C 1 -C 10 ) alkyl; R 2 is hydrogen; and R 3 is wherein m is zero wherein n is 0. 2. The process according to claim 1 , wherein carbonyl compound is of formula II: wherein R 4 and R 5 are (C 5 -C 7 ) alkyl. 3. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the polyol is a sugar alcohol. 4. A compound according to the following formula: wherein R 1 is (C 1 -C 10 ) alkyl, R 2 is hydrogen; and R 3 is wherein each m is zero and wherein n is 0. 5. The compound according to claim 4 , wherein R 1 is (C 5 -C 7 ) alkyl.
