Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

In one embodiment, a medical device includes an elongate member, a first coupler, and a second coupler. The elongate member has a first end portion, a second end portion, and a side portion. The side portion of the elongate member has a first receiving portion and a second receiving portion. The first receiving portion is configured to receive a first support member. The second receiving portion is configured to receive a second support member. The first coupler is coupled to the elongate member and is configured to engage the first support member to help retain the first support member within the first receiving portion. The second coupler is coupled to the elongate member and is configured to engage the second support member to help retain the second support member within the second receiving portion.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A medical device, comprising: an elongate member having a longitudinal axis, the longitudinal axis defined by a distance extending from a first end portion to a second end portion, and a side portion, the side portion of the elongate member having a receiving portion configured to receive a support member; a first coupler coupled to the elongate member and configured to engage the support member to help retain the support member within the first receiving portion; and a second coupler coupled to the elongate member and configured to apply downward pressure on an outer surface of the support member to help retain the support member within the receiving portion, wherein the first coupler is of a first type and the second coupler is of a second type different than the first type, wherein both the first coupler and the second coupler are configured to provide a downward pressure on the support member to help retain the support member within the receiving portion, wherein the second coupler is movably coupled to the elongate member and movable along the longitudinal axis, and wherein at least one retention rod is engaged to the elongate member to movably couple the second coupler to the elongate member, wherein the elongate member includes a slot extending between the first end portion and the second end portion, and at least one of the first coupler and the second coupler is slidably coupled within the slot, wherein the receiving portion is a first receiving portion and the support member is a first support member, the side portion of the elongate member including a second receiving portion configured to receive a second support member. 2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the first coupler includes a screw member and the second coupler includes a cam member. 3. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the second coupler is movably coupled to the elongate member such that the second coupler is configured to be disposed at a first location along a length of the elongate member and engage the support member to help retain the support member within the receiving portion and is configured to be disposed at a second location along the length of the elongate member different than the first location and engage the support member to help retain the support member within the receiving portion. 4. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the second coupler is slidably coupled to the elongate member and is configured to slide within a slot defined by the elongate member. 5. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the receiving portion is a first receiving portion and the support member is a first support member, the elongate member including a second receiving portion configured to receive a second support member. 6. A medical device, comprising: an elongate member having a first end portion, a second end portion, a first side portion, and a second side portion opposite the first side portion, the first side portion having a receiving portion, the second side portion having a receiving portion, the receiving portion of the first side portion being configured to receive a first support member, the receiving portion of the second side portion being configured to receive a second support member; a first coupler coupled to the elongate member and configured to apply downward pressure on the first support member to help retain the first support member within the receiving portion of the first side portion; and a second coupler coupled to the elongate member and configured to engage the second support member to help retain the second support member within the receiving portion of the second side portion wherein the first coupler and the second coupler are slidable along an axis parallel to a longitudinal axis of the elongate member, and wherein at least one retention ring is engaged to the elongate member to movably couple at least one of the first coupler and the second coupler to the elongate member wherein the elongate member includes a slot extending between the first end portion and the second end portion, and the first coupler and the second coupler are slidably coupled within the slot, wherein the first coupler and the second coupler further include a cam member that is configured to extend into the first and second receiving portions, wherein the longitudinal axis of the elongate member being defined by a first distance extending from the first end portion and extending to the second end portion and a vertical axis being defined by second distance extending from a top surface of the elongate member to a bottom surface of the elongate member. 7. The medical device of claim 6 , wherein the receiving portion of the first side portion has a first size such that the receiving portion of the first side portion is configured to receive a support member having a first dimension and the receiving portion of the second side portion has a second size different than the first size such that the receiving portion of the second side portion is configured to receive a support member having a second dimension different than the first dimension. 8. The medical device of claim 6 , wherein the receiving portion of the first side portion has a first width and the receiving portion of the second side portion has a second width different than the first width.
