Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A row unit for a seeding machine includes a frame and first and second seed meters. The first seed meter has a first metering member for singulating seeds, and the second seed meter has a second metering member for singulating seeds. A conveyor having a conduit defining a path for receiving seeds from the first and second seed meters is configured to discharge the seeds from the seeding machine. A wall is movably mounted with respect to the frame between a first position and a second position. In the first position the wall intersects the path of the conduit for guiding a seed into the conduit, and in the second position the wall is spaced from the path of the conduit.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A row unit for a seeding machine comprising: a frame; a first seed meter coupled to the frame, the first seed meter having a first metering member for singulating seeds; a second seed meter coupled to the frame, the second seed meter having a second metering member for singulating seeds; a conveyor having a conduit defining a path for receiving seeds from the first and second seed meters and configured to discharge the seeds from the seeding machine; and a wall movably mounted with respect to the frame between a first position and a second position, wherein in the first position the wall intersects the path of the conduit for guiding a seed into the conduit, and in the second position the wall is spaced from the path of the conduit. 2. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 1 , further comprising a housing having at least one receptacle therein for receiving a seed, the housing having a first opening disposed proximate the first seed meter for admitting a seed from the first seed meter into the housing, a second opening disposed proximate the second seed meter for admitting a seed from the second seed meter into the housing, and a third opening proximate the conveyor for depositing one of the seeds into the conduit. 3. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 2 , wherein the wall is disposed proximate the third opening. 4. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 2 , wherein a seed loader is rotatably mounted in the housing for guiding seeds from the first and second openings to the third opening. 5. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 1 , wherein the wall is rotatably mounted with respect to the frame. 6. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 1 , further comprising a motor for driving at least one of the first or second seed meters by way of a shaft operably coupled therebetween, wherein the wall is rotatably mounted to the shaft by way of a bearing. 7. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 6 , wherein a motor output is reversible between a first direction and a second direction, the motor output driving the first seed meter in the first direction and driving the second seed meter in the second direction, wherein rotation of the motor output in the first direction effectuates movement of the wall into the first position at least in part due to friction in the bearing, and wherein rotation of the motor output in the second direction effectuates movement of the wall into the second position at least in part due to friction in the bearing. 8. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 7 , further comprising a stop configured to limit movement of the wall from the first position to the second position. 9. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 1 , further comprising a seed loader in communication with the first and second seed meters, the seed loader cooperating with the wall to move seeds from the first and second seed meters into an inner region of the conduit. 10. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 1 , wherein the wall is a first wall, the row unit further comprising a second wall, wherein the first and second walls define an opening therebetween, the opening being disposed proximate the conveyor for depositing one of the seeds into the conduit, the first and second walls being movably mounted such that when the first wall is in the first position, the second wall is spaced from the path of the conduit and when the first wall is in the second position, the second wall intersects the path of the conduit. 11. A row unit for a seeding machine comprising: a frame; a first seed meter coupled to the frame, the first seed meter having a first metering member for singulating seeds; a second seed meter coupled to the frame, the second seed meter having a second metering member for singulating seeds; a conveyor having a conduit defining a path for receiving seeds from the first and second seed meters and configured to discharge the seeds from the seeding machine; and a wall movably mounted with respect to the frame between a first position and a second position, wherein in the first position the wall enters an inner region of the conduit for guiding a seed securely into the conduit, and in the second position the wall is disposed adjacent an edge of the conduit. 12. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 11 , further comprising a housing having at least one receptacle therein for receiving a seed, the housing having a first opening disposed proximate the first seed meter for admitting a seed from the first seed meter into the housing, a second opening disposed proximate the second seed meter for admitting a seed from the second seed meter into the housing, and a third opening proximate the conveyor for depositing one of the seeds into the conduit. 13. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 12 , wherein the wall is disposed proximate the third opening. 14. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 12 , wherein a seed loader is rotatably mounted in the housing for guiding seeds from the first and second openings to the third opening. 15. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 11 , wherein the wall is rotatably mounted with respect to the frame. 16. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 11 , further comprising a motor for driving at least one of the first or second seed meters by way of a shaft operably coupled therebetween, wherein the wall is rotatably mounted to the shaft by way of a bearing. 17. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 16 , wherein a motor output is reversible between a first direction and a second direction, the motor output driving the first seed meter in the first direction and driving the second seed meter in the second direction, wherein rotation of the motor output in the first direction effectuates movement of the wall into the first position at least in part due to friction in the bearing, and wherein rotation of the motor output in the second direction effectuates movement of the wall into the second position at least in part due to friction in the bearing. 18. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 17 , further comprising a stop configured to limit movement of the wall from the first position to the second position. 19. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 11 , further comprising a seed loader in communication with the first and second seed meters, the seed loader cooperating with the wall to move seeds from the first and second seed meters into the inner region of the conduit. 20. The row unit for a seeding machine of claim 11 , wherein the wall is a first wall, the row unit further comprising a second wall, wherein the first and second walls define an opening therebetween, the opening being disposed proximate the conveyor for depositing one of the seeds into the conduit, the first and second walls being movably mounted such that when the first wall is in the first position, the second wall is disposed adjacent the edge of the conduit and when the first wall is in the second position, the second wall enters the inner region of the conduit.
