Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A magazine for use with a fastening tool. The magazine can have a pusher assembly that can be retracted into a recess in the magazine to facilitate loading and reloading of fasteners. The magazine can also use a lockout mechanism which allows an operator to know when it is appropriate to reload fasteners and which can mitigate damage resulting from an impact upon the fastening tools nosepiece when the lockout mechanism is engaged. The fastening tool can also have a contact trip actuator which is compact and can control the amount of force that is applied to a tactile switch of the fastener driving mechanism.

We claim: 1. A magazine for a fastening device, comprising: a nail track disposed along a longitudinal length of said magazine; a pusher assembly adapted to have an engaged state and a retracted state, said pusher assembly adapted to move in a lateral direction into said nail track when said pusher assembly is in said engaged state and in a lateral direction out of said nail track when said pusher assembly is in said retracted state, said pusher assembly having: a pusher adapted to contact a fastener and to impart a force upon said fastener in a direction toward a nosepiece when said pusher assembly is in said engaged state; and a pusher assembly knob connected to said pusher; a recess, in said magazine, into which said pusher is reversibly retracted when said pusher assembly knob is moved to reversibly retract said pusher at least in part into said recess to achieve said retracted state, said recess being located at an end of said magazine opposite to said nosepiece; and a detent adapted to reversibly maintain said pusher assembly in said retracted state out of said nail track and in said recess, said detent comprising a raised portion configured to extend toward at least a portion of said pusher assembly knob and be configured to reversibly mate with said pusher assembly knob, wherein said pusher assembly knob has a mated state in which said pusher assembly knob is reversibly mated with said detent in said retracted state, and an unmated state in which said pusher assembly is in said engaged state, wherein said mated state has at least a portion of said pusher assembly knob reversibly fixed in place by mating said pusher assembly knob with said detent. 2. The magazine for a fastening device according to claim 1 , in which said detent comprises a spring loaded detent. 3. The magazine for a fastening device according to claim 1 , wherein said pusher assembly knob is reversibly fixed in place when said detent and said knob are reversibly mated together. 4. The magazine for a fastening device according to claim 3 , in which said detent comprises a detent base end portion configured to reversibly mate with a pusher assembly knob base portion. 5. The magazine for a fastening device according to claim 3 , further comprising a stop which is located proximate to said detent. 6. The magazine for a fastening device according to claim 1 , further comprising a pusher guide track which guides a path of said pusher. 7. The magazine for a fastening device according to claim 6 , further comprising a guide track ramp configured such that said pusher can be reversibly moved from a position at least in part in said recess guided by said guide track ramp to a position along said pusher guide track. 8. A fastening tool, comprising: a magazine; a nail track disposed along a longitudinal length of said magazine; a nosepiece adapted to receive a fastener from said magazine; a power source adapted to power a fastener driving mechanism which can drive said fastener when triggered; a pusher assembly disposed on said magazine and adapted to have an engaged state and a retracted state, said pusher assembly adapted to move in a lateral direction into said nail track when said pusher assembly is in said engaged state and in a lateral direction out of said nail track when said pusher assembly is in said retracted state, said pusher assembly having: a pusher adapted to impart a force upon said fastener in a direction toward said nosepiece when said pusher assembly is in said engaged state; and a pusher assembly knob connected to said pusher; a recess, in said magazine, into which said pusher is reversibly retracted when said pusher assembly knob is moved to reversibly retract said pusher at least in part into said recess to achieve said retracted state, said recess being located at an end of said magazine opposite to said nosepiece; and a detent adapted to reversibly maintain said pusher assembly in said retracted state out of said nail track and in said recess, wherein said detent comprises a raised portion configured to reversibly mate with said pusher assembly knob, and wherein said pusher assembly knob is configured to move away from said detent when released from a mated state with said detent. 9. The fastening tool according to claim 8 , in which said fastening tool is a nailer and said fastener is a nail. 10. The fastening tool according to claim 8 , in which said detent comprises a spring loaded detent. 11. The fastening tool according to claim 8 , wherein said pusher assembly knob is reversibly fixed in place when said detent and said knob are reversibly mated together. 12. A magazine for a fastening device, comprising: a nail track disposed along a longitudinal length of said magazine; a pusher assembly adapted to have an engaged state and a retracted state, and adapted to move in a lateral direction into said nail track when said pusher assembly is in said engaged state and in a lateral direction out of said nail track when said pusher assembly is in said retracted state, said pusher assembly having a pusher adapted to contact a fastener and to impart a force upon said fastener in a direction toward a nosepiece when said pusher assembly is in said engaged state; a recess in said magazine, into which said pusher at least in part is reversibly retracted when the pusher assembly is in a retracted state, said recess being located at an end of said magazine opposite to said nosepiece; a means for reversibly retracting said pusher at least in part into said recess; a means for reversibly maintaining said pusher assembly in said retracted state out of said nail track and in said recess, wherein said means for reversibly maintaining said pusher assembly is configured to reversibly mate with said means for reversibly retracting said pusher in an overlapping arrangement, and wherein said means for reversibly retracting said pusher is configured to move away from said detent when in an unmated state. 13. The magazine according to claim 12 , in which said fastening device is a nailer. 14. The magazine according to claim 12 , in which said means for reversibly maintaining said pusher assembly in a retracted state is a detent. 15. The magazine according to claim 14 , having a means to apply a motive force to said pusher to engage said pusher with a fastener when said pusher is not maintained in a retracted state.
