Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A device for winding a filament around a structure disposed concentrically around a distal end of a balloon catheter includes a rotatable holder for retaining a distal end of the balloon catheter, a translatable winding carriage for helically winding the tensioned filament around the balloon catheter distal end, a heater for applying a predetermined amount of heat to a section of the balloon catheter having the filament wound therearound, and a controller for controlling at least the rate of rotation of the holder, the tensioning force applied to the filament, the amount of heat applied by the heater, and the rate of travel of the translatable winding carriage along the longitudinal dimension of the balloon catheter. By use of the device, the balloon is heat set and a predetermined checkering pattern of surface indentations are provided in the structure exterior surface in a single pass.

The invention claimed is: 1. A device for winding a filament around at least a first portion of a catheter aligned with a longitudinal axis, comprising: a carriage adapted for moving along the longitudinal axis while winding the filament around the first portion of the catheter; a holder for holding the catheter adjacent to the carriage during winding of the filament, said holder comprising a clamp mounted for rotation about the longitudinal axis, the clamp having an open position for receiving the catheter and a closed position for retaining the catheter; and a controller for controlling the movement of the winding carriage along the longitudinal axis and the rotation of the rotatable clamp about the longitudinal axis. 2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the holder is adapted for retaining a portion of the catheter extending radially from the longitudinal axis. 3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the catheter includes an elongated shaft, and wherein the holder is adapted for rotating about the longitudinal axis, said holder having an interior portion for receiving and storing the elongated shaft. 4. The device of claim 1 , wherein a groove is provided for receiving the catheter, the clamp holding the catheter in the groove in the closed position. 5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the catheter comprises a balloon, and further including a heater for applying heat to the balloon adjacent the point at which the filament is wrapped. 6. The device of claim 1 , further including means for heating the catheter or the filament during winding of the filament. 7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the means for heating comprises a heater positioned adjacent a point at which the filament is wrapped around the catheter. 8. A device for winding a filament around a balloon concentrically disposed around an exterior surface of a balloon catheter to form filament loops that provide a predetermined pattern of surface indentations in an exterior surface of the balloon, comprising: a rotatable holder for rotating the balloon catheter about a longitudinal axis; a translatable winding carriage for winding the filament around the exterior surface of the balloon; and means for controlling movement of the carriage along the longitudinal axis of the balloon catheter to wind the filament around the balloon catheter at an edge to edge spacing between filament loops. 9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the carriage further comprises a supporting follower including at least one roller for guiding the filament-wrapped balloon. 10. The device of claim 8 , wherein the rotatable holder is adapted for rotatably engaging a distal end of the catheter, and further including a second holder for holding a proximal end of the catheter which does not include the balloon to be wrapped. 11. The device of claim 10 , wherein the second holder comprises a generally circular body perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the catheter. 12. The device of claim 8 , wherein the winding carriage is adapted to wind the filament around the balloon exterior and a heater is adapted to apply heat to the balloon to heat-set the predetermined pattern of surface indentation in the exterior surface of the balloon in a single pass. 13. The device of claim 8 , wherein the holder comprises a mandrel for holding a distal end of the catheter near a distal end of the balloon, and further comprises a clamping assembly for receiving an intermediate portion of the catheter near a proximal end of the balloon. 14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the clamping assembly includes a guide post with a groove for receiving the catheter proximal to the balloon to be wound. 15. A device for winding a filament around a balloon concentrically disposed around an exterior surface of a balloon catheter to provide a predetermined pattern of surface indentations in an exterior surface of the balloon, comprising: a holder for rotating the balloon catheter about a longitudinal axis; a translatable winding carriage for winding the filament around the exterior surface of the balloon; and means for controlling movement of the carriage along the longitudinal axis of the balloon catheter to wind the filament around the balloon catheter at an included angle from greater than 0 degrees to about 45 degrees from an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis. 16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the means for controlling comprises a controller adapted for controlling the movement of the carriage to wind the filament at an edge to edge spacing of between 0.5 and 3 millimeters. 17. The device of claim 16 , wherein the edge to edge spacing is 1 millimeter. 18. The device of claim 8 , wherein the edge to edge spacing is between 0.5 and 3 millimeters. 19. The device of claim 8 , wherein the edge to edge spacing is 1 millimeter. 20. The device of claim 8 , wherein the means for controlling comprises a controller adapted for controlling the movement of the carriage to wind the filament at an included angle from greater than 0 degrees to about 45 degrees from an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis. 21. A device for winding a filament around at least a first portion of a catheter aligned with a longitudinal axis, comprising: a carriage adapted for moving along the longitudinal axis while winding the filament around the first portion of the catheter; a holder for holding the catheter adjacent to the carriage during winding of the filament, said holder comprising a clamp mounted for rotation about the longitudinal axis; and a controller for controlling the movement of the winding carriage along the longitudinal axis and the rotation of the rotatable clamp about the longitudinal axis; wherein the holder is adapted for retaining a portion of the catheter extending radially from the longitudinal axis. 22. A device for winding a filament around a balloon concentrically disposed around an exterior surface of a balloon catheter to form filament loops that provide a predetermined pattern of surface indentations in an exterior surface of the balloon, comprising: a rotatable holder for rotating the balloon catheter about a longitudinal axis; a translatable winding carriage for winding the filament around the exterior surface of the balloon; and a controller for controlling movement of the carriage along the longitudinal axis of the balloon catheter to wind the filament around the balloon catheter at an edge to edge spacing between filament loops; wherein the rotatable holder is adapted for rotatably engaging a distal end of the catheter, and further including a second holder for holding a proximal end of the catheter which does not include the balloon to be wrapped.
