Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of forming a film resistant to blocking including the steps of providing a polymeric film having a first and second surface; applying the anti-blocking agent in a fluid or molten state to at least the first surface of the polymeric film; and gathering the treated film. The anti-blocking agent may be substantially acrylic free.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method of forming a roll of thermoplastic elastomeric film resistant to blocking, and using said film, said method comprising the steps of: a) providing a thermoplastic elastomeric film having a first surface and a second surface in a continuous manner by on-line formation by extrusion, b) following formation of the film by extrusion and prior to gathering the film on a roll, applying an anti-blocking agent in a molten state to at least the first surface of the film to provide a formation of said anti-blocking agent on said first surface, and thereby form a treated surface, wherein said applying step comprises applying the anti-blocking agent as a fine mist; said fine mist having an average particle diameter of less than or equal to 1000 μm, and c) following formation of said treated surface, gathering the film on a roll to form a bulk roll having rolled layers of the film with the treated surface in contact with the second surface. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the film comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyvinylarenes, styrenic block copolymers, polyolefins, metallocene-catalyzed polyolefins, polyesters, polyurethanes, polyether amides, and combinations thereof. 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the anti-blocking agent comprises a material selected from the group consisting of a phase change solvent, a wax, and combinations thereof. 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the anti-blocking agent comprises a wax selected from the group consisting of animal-based waxes, vegetable-based waxes, petroleum-based waxes, synthetic waxes, mineral-based waxes, and combinations thereof. 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the anti-blocking agent comprises a wax which exhibits a property selected from the group consisting of: a) a Mettler drop point equal to or greater than about 60° C., b) a density from about 0.85 to about 0.98 g/cm3, c) a melt index at 190° C. from about 1 g to about 5,000 g per 10 minutes, and d) combinations thereof. 6. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of cooling the treated film; wherein the step of cooling is performed prior to the step of gathering the treated film. 7. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of consolidating the treated film wherein the anti-blocking agent and polymeric film are compressed together; wherein the step of consolidating is performed prior to the step of gathering the treated film. 8. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of storing the gathered film for a dwell time of at least about 24 hours. 9. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of separating the gathered film, said separation results in the detachment of at least some portion of the gathered film that was in contact with itself and wherein the separation requires an average T-Peel force of less than or equal to about 20 N/cm.
