Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A process is provided comprising contacting and reacting the compound CF 3 CF 2 CHXCl, wherein X is H or Cl, or the compound CF 3 CF═CXCl, wherein X is H or Cl, with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst consisting essentially of Cu, Ru, Cu—Pd, Ni—Cu, and Ni—Pd, to obtain as a result thereof reaction product comprising hydrofluoropropenes or intermediates convertible to said hydrofluoropropenes, notably CF 3 CF═CH 2 and CF 3 CH═CHF.

What is claimed is: 1. A process comprising contacting and reacting the compound CF 3 CF 2 CHCl 2 , or the compound CF 3 CF═CXCl, wherein X is H or Cl, with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst consisting essentially of Cu, Ru, Cu—Pd, Ni—Cu, or Ni—Pd, to obtain as a result thereof a reaction product comprising the compound CF 3 CF═CH 2 and at least one of the compounds CF 3 CF═CHCl or CF 3 CF 2 CH 2 Cl, wherein no detectable CF 3 CH═CH 2 is found in said reaction product, and wherein the CF 3 CF═CHCl is converted to the reaction product comprising the compound CF 3 CF═CH 2 by hydrogenation in the presence of a catalyst. 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said compound CF 3 CF 2 CH 2 Cl is converted to reaction product comprising the compound CF 3 CF═CH 2 , first by dehydrofluorination of said compound CF 3 CF 2 CH 2 Cl to form the compound CF 3 CF═CHCl and then hydrogenation of said compound CF 3 CF═CHCl in the presence of catalyst. 3. The process of claim 1 wherein said compound CF 3 CF 2 CH 2 Cl is converted to reaction product comprising CF 3 CF═CH 2 by hydrogenation in the presence of catalyst. 4. The process of claim 1 wherein said compound CF 3 CF 2 CHCl 2 is accompanied by the compound CF 3 CCl 2 CHF 2 in said contacting and reacting with hydrogen in the presence of said catalyst, whereby said reaction product comprise at least one of the compounds CF 3 CCl═CHF, CF 3 CHClCHF 2 , CF 3 CH 2 CF 2 H, or CF 3 CH═CHF. 5. The process of claim 4 wherein said compound CF 3 CCl═CHF is hydrogenated to form a reaction product comprising at least one of the compounds CF 3 CH═CHF or CF 3 CHClCH 2 F. 6. The process of claim 5 wherein compound CF 3 CHClCH 2 F is converted to the reaction product comprising the compound CF 3 CH═CHF by dehydrochlorination. 7. The process of claim 4 wherein said compound CF 3 CHClCHF 2 is converted to reaction product comprising the compounds CF 3 CH═CF 2 or CF 3 CH═CHF. 8. The process of claim 4 wherein said compound CF 3 CH 2 CF 2 H is dehydrofluorinated to form the reaction product comprising CF 3 CH═CHF. 9. The process of claim 1 wherein said compound is CF 3 CF═CXCl, wherein X is Cl or CF 3 CF═CXCl, wherein X is H or a mixture thereof, and said reaction product comprises the compound CF 3 CF 2 ═CH 2 . 10. The process of claim 1 wherein said catalyst includes a support.
