Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A storage bag includes a first sidewall having a top edge and a bottom edge, and a plurality of shift regions about which the bag is capable of shifting. At least one of the shift regions includes one of a score line, an indentation, and a crimp formed into the first sidewall, and extends a distance along the first sidewall starting from near the bottom edge of the first sidewall. A second sidewall is connected to the first sidewall so as to form an interior of the bag with an opening to the interior and having a top edge and a bottom edge. At least one of the shift regions of the first and second sidewalls extends across and intersects with another of the shift regions of the first and second sidewalls, to facilitate shifting of the bag. The bag shifts between a flat configuration, and a stand-up configuration.

We claim: 1. A storage bag comprising: (A) a first sidewall having a top edge and a bottom edge, and including a plurality of shift regions about which the bag is capable of shifting, at least one of the plurality of shift regions comprising one of (i) a score line, (ii) an indentation, and (iii) a crimp formed into the first sidewall, the at least one of the plurality of shift regions extending a distance along the first sidewall starting from near the bottom edge of the first sidewall, wherein the at least one of the plurality of shift regions of the first sidewall extends across and intersects with another of the at least one of the plurality of shift regions of the first sidewall, to facilitate shifting of the bag; and (B) a second sidewall connected to the first sidewall so as to form an interior of the bag with an opening to the interior, the second sidewall having a top edge and a bottom edge, and including a plurality of shift regions about which the bag is capable of shifting, at least one of the plurality of shift regions comprising one of (i) a score line, (ii) an indentation, and (iii) a crimp formed into the second sidewall, the at least one of the plurality of shift regions extending a distance along the second sidewall starting from near the bottom edge of the second sidewall, wherein the at least one of the plurality of shift regions of the second sidewall extends across and intersects with another of the at least one of the plurality of shift regions of the second sidewall, to facilitate the shifting of the bag, wherein the bag shifts between (i) a flat configuration with the first and second sidewalls positioned adjacent to each other, and (ii) a stand-up configuration with the first and second sidewalls separated from each other, such that, in the stand-up configuration, the bag has a substantially flat base. 2. The storage bag according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of shift regions of the first sidewall includes at least three shift regions, with one of those shift regions extending across and intersecting with two other shift regions. 3. The storage bag according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of shift regions of the second sidewall includes at least three shift regions, with one of those shift regions extending across and intersecting with two other shift regions. 4. The storage bag according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of shift regions of the first sidewall includes at least four shift regions, with one of those shift regions extending across and intersecting with three other shift regions, and wherein the plurality of shift regions of the second sidewall includes at least four shift regions, with one of those shift regions extending across and intersecting with three other shift regions. 5. The storage bag according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of shift regions of the first sidewall includes at least four shift regions, with two of those shift regions extending across and intersecting with two other shift regions, and wherein the plurality of shift regions of the second sidewall includes at least four shift regions, with two of those shift regions extending across and intersecting with two other shift regions. 6. The storage bag according to claim 1 , wherein (a) the first sidewall of the bag has an elevation and a thickness, and the plurality of shift regions of the first sidewall are one of (i) changes in the elevation and (ii) changes in the thickness in portions of the first sidewall, and (b) the second sidewall of the bag has an elevation and a thickness, and the plurality of shift regions of the second sidewall are one of (i) changes in the elevation and (ii) changes in the thickness in portions of the second sidewall. 7. The storage bag according to claim 1 , further comprising: a first closure structure extending from a first side of the first sidewall to a second side of the first sidewall; a second closure structure extending from a first side of the second sidewall to a second side of the second sidewall, the second closure structure being configured to interlock with the first closure structure and thereby to seal the opening of the bag; a first lip formed on the same side of the bag as the first sidewall, the lip (i) extending from the first closure structure to the top edge of the first sidewall, and (ii) provided adjacent to the opening of the bag; and a second lip formed on the same side of the bag as the second sidewall, the lip (i) extending from the second closure structure to the top edge of the second sidewall, and (ii) provided adjacent to the opening of the bag. 8. The storage bag according to claim 7 , wherein each of the first and second sidewalls has a thickness, and each of the first and second lips has a thickness that is greater than that of each of the respective first and second sidewalls. 9. The storage bag according to claim 7 , wherein (a) the first sidewall is formed from a material, and the first lip is formed at least partially from a material that is different than that used to form the first sidewall, and (b) the second sidewall is formed from a material, and the second lip is formed at least partially from a material that is different than that used to form the second sidewall. 10. A storage bag comprising: (A) a first sidewall having a top edge and a bottom edge, and including (a) at least a first shift region about which the bag is capable of shifting, the at least a first shift region comprising one of (i) a score line, (ii) an indentation, and (iii) a crimp formed into the first sidewall, and the at least a first shift region extending a distance along the first sidewall, and (b) at least a second shift region about which the bag is capable of shifting, the at least a second shift region comprising material added to the first sidewall, and the at least a second shift region extending along the first sidewall; and (B) a second sidewall connected to the first sidewall so as to form an interior of the bag with an opening to the interior, wherein the bag shifts about the at least a first shift region of the first sidewall and the at least a second shift region of the first sidewall such that the bag can be shifted between (i) a flat configuration with the first and second sidewalls positioned adjacent to each other, and (ii) a stand-up configuration with the first and second sidewalls separated from each other, such that, in the stand-up configuration, the bag has a substantially flat base. 11. The storage bag according to claim 10 , wherein at least a portion of the first sidewall has a thickness, and the at least a second shift region of the first sidewall has a thickness that is about two to about twenty times the thickness of the at least a portion of the first sidewall. 12.
