A method of designing a multifocal ophthalmic lens with one base focus and at least one additional focus, capable of reducing aberrations of the eye for at least one of the foci after its implantation, comprising the steps of: (i) characterizing at least one corneal surface as a mathematical model; (ii) calculating the resulting aberrations of said corneal surface(s) by employing said mathematical model; (iii) modelling the multifocal ophthalmic lens such that a wavefront arriving from an optical system comprising said lens and said at least one corneal surface obtains reduced aberrations for at least one of the foci. There is also disclosed a method of selecting a multifocal intraocular lens, a method of designing a multifocal ophthalmic lens based on corneal data from a group of patients, and a multifocal ophthalmic lens.

The invention claimed is: 1. A multifocal intraocular lens, comprising: an anterior surface and an opposing posterior surface; wherein at least one of the surfaces of the intraocular lens is a prolate surface characterized by an equation z = ( 1 / R ) ⁢ r 2 1 + 1 - ( 1 R ) 2 ⁢ ( c ⁢ ⁢ c + 1 ) ⁢ r 2 + adr 4 + aer 6 wherein z is the sag, cc is a conical constant, R is a central lens radius, r is the distance from the optical axis and ad and ae are aspheric polynomial coefficients; and wherein cc has a value of between about −0.05 and about −1.02. 2. The intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein the multifocal lens is a biconvex lens. 3. The intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein the intraocular lens comprises a refractive index of about 1.45. 4. The intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein the intraocular lens comprises a thickness of about 1.1 mm. 5. The intraocular lens of claim 1 , wherein the intraocular lens is a silicone lens.
