An agricultural harvester includes a chassis and a residue handling system carried by the chassis. The residue handling system includes a set of rotating knives disposed in a housing, a first set of counter-knives, and a residue pivoting platform and/or a second set of counter-knives. Crop residue travels through the system in a residue flow direction. The first set of counter-knives are configured to enter the housing proximate to the set of rotating knives. The residue pivoting platform is positioned proximate to the first set of counter-knives in an upstream direction relative to the crop residue flow direction. The second set of counter-knives are configured to enter the housing proximate to the set of rotating knives. The second set of counter-knives are in a downstream direction relative to the crop residue flow from at least one of the residue pivoting platform and the first set of counter-knives.

What is claimed is: 1. An agricultural harvester, comprising: a chassis; and a residue handling system carried by said chassis, said residue handling system for processing crop residue moving in a crop residue flow direction, said residue handling system including: a housing; a set of rotating knives disposed in said housing; a first set of counter-knives configured to enter said housing proximate to said set of rotating knives; a residue pivoting platform being positioned proximate to said first set of counter-knives; and a shred bar coupled to said residue pivoting platform, said shred bar including fingers that extend between individual knives of said set of rotating knives when said residue pivoting platform is pivoted away from said housing. 2. The agricultural harvester of claim 1 , wherein said residue pivoting platform is configured to be substantially flush with an inside wall of said housing when said residue pivoting platform is substantially retracted. 3. The agricultural harvester of claim 1 , wherein said residue pivoting platform is positioned upstream of said first set of counter-knives. 4. The agricultural harvester of claim 3 , wherein said first set of counter-knives are the only counter-knives of the residue handling system. 5. A residue handling system for processing crop residue moving in a crop residue flow direction in an agricultural harvester, the residue handling system comprising: a housing; a set of rotating knives disposed in said housing; a first set of counter-knives configured to enter said housing proximate to said set of rotating knives; a residue pivoting platform positioned proximate to said first set of counter-knives; and a shred bar coupled to said residue pivoting platform, said shred bar including fingers that extend between individual knives of said set of rotating knives when said residue pivoting platform is pivoted away from said housing. 6. The residue handling system of claim 5 , wherein said residue pivoting platform is configured to be substantially flush with an inside wall of said housing when said residue pivoting platform is substantially retracted. 7. The residue handling system of claim 5 , wherein said residue pivoting platform is positioned upstream of said first set of counter-knives. 8. The residue handling system of claim 7 , wherein said first set of counter-knives are the only counter-knives of the residue handling system. 9. A residue handling system for processing crop residue moving in a crop residue flow direction in an agricultural harvester, the residue handling system comprising: a housing; a set of rotating knives disposed in the housing; a first set of counter-knives configured to enter the housing proximate to the set of rotating knives; a residue pivoting platform positioned proximate to the first set of counter-knives; and a shred bar coupled to the residue pivoting platform, the shred bar having fingers that extend between individual knives of the set of rotating knives when the residue pivoting platform is pivoted from the housing toward the set of rotating knives. 10. The residue handling system of claim 9 , wherein the residue pivoting platform is positioned upstream of the first set of counter-knives.
