A thin film composite polyamide membrane having a porous support and a thin film polyamide layer comprising a reaction product of m-phenylene diamine (mPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC), characterized by the thin film polyamide layer having a critical strain value of less than 10%. In another embodiment, the thin film polyamide layer has a modulus of greater than 0.75 (GPa). In yet another embodiment, the thin film polyamide layer has an equilibrium swelling value of at least 45%. In another embodiment, the thin film polyamide layer has a thickness of at least 230 nm.

The invention claimed is: 1. A thin film composite polyamide membrane comprising a porous support and a thin film polyamide layer comprising a reaction product of m-phenylene diamine (mPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC), wherein the membrane is characterized by the thin film polyamide layer having: i) a modulus of 0.75 to 3.3 (GPa), and ii) an equilibrium swelling value of 45 to 317%. 2. The membrane of claim 1 wherein the thin film polyamide layer is characterized by having a thickness of at least 230 nm. 3. A method for making a thin film composite membrane by applying a polar solution of m-phenylene diamine and a non-polar solution comprising trimesoyl chloride to a surface of a porous support to form a thin film polyamide layer, wherein the non-polar solution further comprises: i) from 0.01 to 0.15 wt % of an acid compound comprising at least one acyl halide moiety and at least one carboxylic acid moiety, and ii) a tri-hydrocarbyl phosphate compound; wherein the tri-hydrocarbyl phosphate compound is present in a molar ratio of: a) 0.1:1 to 2:1 with the acid compound, and b) 1:1 to 5:1 with trimesoyl chloride. 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the acid compound comprises mono-hydrolyzed trimesoyl chloride.
