Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A control unit for a LED assembly includes a first and second LED unit, the LED units being serial connected. The LED assembly, in use, is powered by a switched mode power supply. The control unit being arranged to receive an input signal representing a desired output characteristic of the LED assembly, determine a first and second duty cycle for respective LED units associated with a nominal current of the switched mode power supply, for providing the desired output characteristic, determine the largest of the first and second duty cycles for respective LED units, determine a reduced current based on at least the largest of the duty cycles, adjust the first and second duty cycle for respective LED units based on the reduced current, and provide an output signal for the LED assembly and the switched mode power supply based on the adjusted first and second duty cycles and the reduced current for obtaining the desired characteristic.

The invention claimed is: 1. A circuit that drives a light emitting diode (LED) assembly, the LED assembly comprising at least one LED illumination device, the circuit comprising: a switch; an inductor connected in a series with the switch, the switch charging the inductor in a conductive state; a current measurement element that measures a current flowing through at least one of the inductor and the LED illumination device, the switch, inductor, and current measurement element being serially connected with the LED illumination device during operation; a reference signal generator that generates a reference signal; a comparator that compares a signal representing the current measured by the current measurement element with the reference signal, an output signal of the comparator, which represents a result of the comparison, being provided to the switch for driving the switch; and a controller that controls an operation of the reference signal generator, wherein the controller is configured to dim the LED illumination device by controlling the reference signal generator to alternate between generating a first reference signal value during a first part of a cycle time and a second reference signal value, that differs from the first reference signal value, during a second, remaining part of the cycle time, both the first and second reference signal values being non-zero, the cycle time being a modulation cycle time and extending over plural switching cycles of the comparator and the switch, the generating of the first reference signal value during the first part of the cycle time providing that the periodical switching of the comparator and the switch in the first cycle time part resulting in a first current level, the first current level providing an average voltage over the current measurement element corresponding to the first reference signal value, and the generating of the second reference signal value during the second, remaining part of the cycle time providing that the periodical switching of the comparator and the switch in the second cycle time part resulting in a second current level, the second current level providing an average voltage over the current measurement element corresponding to the second reference signal value, the first and second current levels being non-zero, the second current level differing from the first current level, thereby dimming the current of the LED illumination device over the cycle time to a level in between the first current level and the second current level hence increasing resolution of dimming the current of the LED illumination device. 2. The circuit according to claim 1 , wherein the comparator comprises an enable input, driven by the controller, the controller is configured to drive the enable input so as to disable the comparator during at least a portion of the cycle time. 3. The circuit according to claim 2 , wherein the controller is configured to enable the comparator to allow generation of at least one short current pulse at least once during the cycle time. 4. The circuit according to claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to provide enable pulses that enable the comparator in at least two cycle time portions of a cycle time, a pulse length of the enable pulses being varied within each cycle time.
