Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A transfer system may be provided. The transfer system may comprise a first transfer switch comprising first normally closed contacts and first normally open contacts. In addition, the transfer system may comprise a second transfer switch comprising second normally closed contacts and second normally open contacts. Furthermore, the transfer system may comprise third normally closed contacts with a solid state switch in parallel. A source monitor may be configured to monitor the quality of a primary source and a backup source. And a source control may be configured to operate the first transfer switch, the second transfer switch, the third normally closed contacts, and the solid state switch to transfer a load from the primary source to the backup source in response to the monitored quality of the primary source and the backup source.

What is claimed is: 1. A transfer system comprising: a first transfer switch coupled to a primary power source; comprising a first set of contacts and a second set of contacts; a second transfer switch coupled to a backup power source; comprising a first set of contacts and a second set of contacts; a set of contacts coupled to the first transfer switch; a source monitor coupled to the primary power source and the backup power source, the source monitor capable of monitoring the primary power source and the backup power source; and a source control configured to operate the first transfer switch, the second transfer switch, and the set of contacts in order to transfer power supplied to a load from the primary power source to the backup power source. 2. The transfer system of claim 1 further comprising a switch coupled to the third set of contacts and configured to receive a signal from the source control to control the flow of current through the switch to the load. 3. The transfer system of claim 2 wherein the switch is a solid state comprises a TRIAC. 4. The transfer system of claim 2 wherein the switch is a solid state switch comprising a resistor in series with a TRIAC. 5. The transfer system of claim 2 wherein the switch is a solid state switch comprising an inductor in series with a TRIAC. 6. The transfer system of claim 2 , wherein the switch is a solid state switch comprising a resistor in series with a first and second silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCR) configured as a bidirectional electrical current switch. 7. The transfer system of claim 2 , wherein the switch is a solid state switch comprising an inductor in series with a first and second silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) configured as a bidirectional electrical current switch. 8. The transfer system of claim 1 wherein the source control is configured with a predetermined set of operating parameters associated with the primary power source. 9. The transfer system of claim 7 wherein the source monitor is configured to supply operating parameters of the primary power source to the source control and the source control is configured to compare the operating parameters of the primary power source to the predetermined set of operating parameters. 10. The transfer system of claim 1 wherein the source control is configured with a predetermined set of operating parameters associated with the backup power source. 11. The transfer system of claim 9 wherein the source monitor supplies operating parameters of the backup power source to the source control and the source control is configured to compare the operating parameters of the backup power source to the predetermined set of operating parameters. 12. The transfer system of claim 1 wherein the first transfer switch comprises a first set of contacts and a second set of contacts. 13. The transfer system of claim 11 wherein the second transfer switch comprises a first set of normally closed contacts and a second set of normally open contacts. 14. The transfer system of claim 12 wherein, when the primary power source is supplying power to the load, the first set of contacts of the first transfer switch and the first set of contacts of the second transfer switch are closed. 15. The transfer switch of claim 12 wherein, when the backup power source is supplying power to the load, the second set of contacts of the first transfer switch and the second set of contacts of the second transfer switch are closed. 16. The transfer system of claim 1 further comprising a current limiter coupled to the load and configured to limit a predetermined number of current cycles to the load when the either the primary power source or the backup power source supplies initial power to the load. 17. The transfer system of claim 1 further comprising a bypass switch connected in parallel with the current limiter and configured to supply power to the load and bypass the current limited after the initial power is supplied to the load. 18. The transfer system of claim 1 further comprising a current limiter coupled to the load and configured to limit a predetermined current level to the load when the either the primary power source or the backup power source supplies initial power to the load. 19. A method of automatically and quickly transferring power to a load from a primary power source to a backup power source comprising: monitoring a power output from the primary power source; determining if the power output from the primary power source is lost; and if the power output from the primary power source is lost, opening a set of contacts disposed between a first transfer switch and the load, opening a first set of contacts within a first transfer switch disposed between the primary power source and the set of contacts, closing a second set of contacts within the first transfer switch; opening a first set of contacts within a second transfer switch disposed between the backup power source and the load, closing a second set of contacts within the second transfer switch and then closing the first set of contacts disposed between the primary power source and the load. 20. A method of automatically and quickly transferring power to a load from a primary power source to a backup power source comprising: monitoring a power output from the primary power source; comparing the power output from the primary power source with a predetermined set of operating parameters associated with the primary power source; determining if the power output from the primary power source is outside the predetermined set of operating parameters associated with the primary power source; and if the power output from the primary power source is outside the predetermined set of operating parameters associated with the primary power source, opening a first set of contacts within a first transfer switch disposed between the primary power source and the set of contacts, closing a second set of contacts within the first transfer switch; opening a first set of contacts within a second transfer switch disposed between the backup power source and the load, closing a second set of contacts within the second transfer switch and then closing the first set of contacts disposed between the primary power source and the load. 21.
