A suture package for retaining a barbed suture is provided. The suture package includes a suture retaining member including an outer wall and an inner wall. The inner wall is radially spaced from the outer wall and defines a suture retaining area therebetween. The inner wall defines a needle retaining area and includes at least one opening therein to permit reception of at least one suture therethrough. The outer wall includes a plurality of inwardly extending tabs configured to engage a cover. The suture package further includes a cover configured to be received within the outer wall of the suture retaining member and to selectively engage the inwardly extending tabs formed thereon.

What is claimed is: 1. A suture package comprising: a suture retaining member including an outer wall and an inner wall, the inner wall being radially spaced from the outer wall and defining a suture retaining area therebetween, wherein the inner wall defines a needle retaining area and includes at least one opening therein to permit reception of at least one suture therethrough, wherein the outer wall includes a plurality of inwardly extending tabs configured to engage a cover; and a cover configured to be received within the outer wall of the suture retaining member and to selectively engage the inwardly extending tabs formed thereon, wherein the cover includes a tab to facilitate separation of the cover from the inwardly extending tabs of the suture retaining member, the tab extending beyond the outer wall when the cover is selectively engaged by the inwardly extending tabs. 2. The suture package of claim 1 , wherein the suture retaining member is rigid. 3. The suture package of claim 2 , wherein the suture retaining member comprises a polymer. 4. The suture package of claim 1 , wherein the cover comprises paper. 5. The suture package of claim 1 , wherein the needle retaining area includes at least one needle park. 6. The suture package of claim 1 , wherein the needle retaining area includes at least three needle parks. 7. The suture package of claim 1 , wherein the needle retaining area includes a foam member configured to receive a needle. 8. The suture package of claim 1 , wherein the outer wall of the suture retaining member includes a recessed portion configured to receive the tab formed in the cover. 9. The suture package of claim 1 , wherein the cover further includes a cut-out configured for operable engagement by a clinician. 10. The suture package of claim 1 , wherein the cover further includes a cut-out configured for viewing at least a portion of the suture retaining area. 11. The suture package of claim 1 , wherein the inner wall is formed from a plurality of protrusions. 12. The suture package of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the protrusions is curved inward to receive an end of a suture thereabout. 13. The suture package of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the protrusions includes a slot configured to securely receive an end of a suture therethrough. 14. The suture package of claim 13 , wherein the slot is configure to securely receive an end effector formed on an end of a suture. 15. The suture package of claim 1 , wherein the suture retaining member is configured to engage a suture loading apparatus. 16. The suture package of claim 1 , wherein the suture retaining member includes openings configured to receive mounting pins of a suture loading apparatus. 17. The suture package of claim 1 , wherein the cover includes openings to engage mounting pins of a suture loading apparatus.
