Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A protective sports helmet that includes a chin strap system that allows for rapid, one-handed adjustment of a chin strap assembly by the player while he/she is wearing the helmet is provided. The chin strap assembly includes a protective chin cup and a pair of straps extending from opposed sides of the chin cup and having a plurality of securing elements. The assembly also includes a pair of adjustable connectors affixed to the helmet and that include a central opening that receives an extent of the strap and a lever that engages a portion of the securing elements. The adjustable connector allows movement of the strap in a first direction, and prevents movement of the strap in a second direction when the lever is engaged with at least one of the securing elements. The adjustable connector allows movement of the strap in both the first and second directions when the lever is not engaged with the securing elements.

We claim: 1. A protective football helmet comprising: a shell having a crown portion, two opposed side portions, a front portion extending between the side portions, and a rear portion extending between the side portions, wherein each side portion includes (a) an ear opening formed through the shell, (b) a recessed receptacle formed in the shell below the ear opening, and (c) a securement opening formed through the shell and aligned with the recessed receptacle, a faceguard; and a chin strap assembly comprising (a) a chin cup, (b) a fastener, (c) a strap having a plurality of securing elements and (d) an adjustable connector, the adjustable connector having a housing defining a central opening that receives an extent of the strap and a separate lever residing within the housing and being configured to engage a portion of the securing elements, wherein the fastener extends into the securement opening and into an aperture in a lower portion of the housing to secure the adjustable connector within the recessed receptacle; wherein the adjustable connector allows movement of the strap in a first direction, and wherein the adjustable connector prevents movement of the strap in a second direction when the lever is engaged with at least one of the securing elements. 2. The football helmet of claim 1 , the strap further having opposed side rails extending substantially along a length of the strap, wherein the securing elements comprise a plurality of ridges that extend between the opposed side rails of the strap. 3. The sports helmet of claim 1 , wherein the adjustable connector is configured to allow movement of the strap in both the first and second directions when the lever is not engaged with the securing elements. 4. The football helmet of claim 3 , wherein the first direction corresponds to tightening the chin strap assembly and the second direction corresponds to loosening the chin strap assembly. 5. The football helmet of claim 1 , wherein the housing is defined by a top wall, a lower mating portion and opposed side walls, wherein the side walls extend upward from the lower mating portion and the top wall extends between the side walls. 6. The football helmet of claim 5 , wherein the lever includes a rear segment that engages the securing elements of the strap and a front segment that extends beyond a front edge of the top wall to expose the front segment, wherein when an actuation force is applied to the front segment of the lever, the lever pivots such that the rear segment of the lever disengages the securing elements of the strap to allow the strap to be moved in the second direction. 7. The football helmet of claim 6 , wherein the adjustable connector includes a biasing member positioned against the lever, wherein the biasing member exerts a force on the lever that biases the rear segment of the lever into engagement with the securing elements of the strap. 8. The football helmet of claim 6 , wherein the actuation force applied to the front segment of the lever overcomes the force exerted by the biasing member on the lever whereby the lever pivots such that the rear segment of the lever disengages the securing elements of the strap to allow the strap to be moved in the second direction. 9. The football helmet of claim 8 , wherein the first direction corresponds to tightening the chin strap assembly and the second direction corresponds to loosening the chin strap assembly. 10. The football helmet of claim 6 , wherein the exposed front segment of the lever resides below the top wall. 11. The football helmet of claim 6 , wherein the exposed front segment of the lever extends forward to a front edge of the side walls. 12. The football helmet of claim 5 , wherein the lower mating portion of the adjustable connector extends into the securement opening of the shell to join the adjustable connector within the recessed receptacle. 13. The football helmet of claim 1 , wherein the recessed receptacle includes a channel in the shell extending from a front edge of the shell, wherein the channel defines a pathway for lateral movement of the strap. 14. An adjustable chin strap system for a protective sports helmet, the chin strap assembly comprising: a chin strap assembly comprising (a) a chin cup, (b) a pair of straps extending from opposed sides of the chin cup, each strap having a plurality of securing elements, and (c) a pair of adjustable connectors configured to be affixed to the helmet, the adjustable connector having a housing defining a central opening that receives an extent of the strap and a separate lever residing within the housing and being configured to engage a portion of the securing elements, wherein the housing is defined by a top wall, a lower mating portion and opposed side walls, wherein the side walls extend upward from the lower mating portion and the top wall extends between the side walls, wherein the adjustable connector allows movement of the strap in a first direction, and wherein the adjustable connector prevents movement of the strap in a second direction when the lever is engaged with at least one of the securing elements. 15. The adjustable chin strap system of claim 14 , each strap further having opposed side rails extending substantially along a length of the strap, wherein the securing elements comprise a plurality of ridges that extend between the opposed side rails of the strap. 16. The adjustable chin strap system of claim 14 , wherein the adjustable connector is configured to allow movement of the strap in both the first and second directions when the lever is not engaged with the securing elements. 17. The adjustable chin strap system of claim 16 , wherein the first direction corresponds to tightening the chin strap assembly and the second direction corresponds to loosening the chin strap assembly. 18. The adjustable chin strap system of claim 14 , further comprising a fastener, wherein the fastener is configured to extend into a securement opening formed through a helmet shell and aligned with a recessed receptacle formed in the helmet shell below an ear opening, and into a lower aperture of the housing to secure the adjustable connector within the recessed receptacle. 19. The adjustable chin strap system of claim 14 , wherein the lever includes a rear segment that engages the securing elements of the strap and a front segment that extends beyond a front edge of the top wall to expose the front segment, wherein when an actuation force is applied to the front segment of the lever, the lever pivots such that the rear segment of the lever disengages the securing elements of the strap to allow the strap to be moved in the second direction. 20. The adjustable chin strap system of claim 19 , wherein the adjustable connector includes a biasing member positioned against the lever, wherein the biasing member exerts a force on the lever that biases the rear segment of the lever into engagement with the securing elements of the strap. 21. The adjustable chin strap system of claim 19 , wherein the actuation force applied to the front segment of the lever overcomes the force exerted by the biasing member on the lever whereby the lever pivots such that the rear segment of the lever disengages the securing elements of the strap to allow the strap to be moved in the second direction. 22. The adjustable chin strap system of claim 21 , wherein the first direction corresponds to tightening the chin strap assembly and the second direction corresponds to loosening the chin
