Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A filter cartridge, a safety element and fluid cleaner assembly are described. The fluid cleaner assembly generally includes a housing having a cover and a primary fluid cleaner section. The filter cartridge generally comprises z-filter media, arranged in a straight through configuration. Preferred cartridges include a seal gasket positioned to extend continuously around at outer perimeter of the straight through flow construction. The fluid cleaner assembly can have a precleaner positioned therein. Preferred features are described. Methods of assembly and use are also provided.

What is claimed is: 1. An air filter cartridge comprising: (a) a z-filter media pack comprising a coiled arrangement of single facer media, wherein the single facer media comprises a fluted media sheet secured to a facing media sheet by a first sealant positioned therebetween, and a second sealant positioned along an opposite side of the facing media sheet from the first sealant, the media pack having an inlet flow face, an outlet flow face, an axial length between the inlet flow face and the outlet flow face, and flutes extending from the inlet flow face to the outlet flow face; wherein the media is closed to the flow of unfiltered air therethrough; (b) a shell having opposite ends and a sidewall extending therebetween, the sidewall circumscribing the media pack, wherein the media pack is secured within the shell; (c) a seal support extending from the shell and having a plurality of apertures therethrough; (d) a seal arrangement secured on the seal support, wherein the seal arrangement is molded to the seal support and extends through the apertures; and (e) the z-filter media pack has a non-circular cross section taken perpendicularly to a direction of extension of the flutes. 2. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the shell comprises a molded plastic material. 3. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the seal arrangement comprises foam polyurethane. 4. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the shell is secured to the media pack by the seal arrangement. 5. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the seal arrangement is constructed to provide an axial seal when in sealing engagement with an air cleaner housing. 6. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the shell includes a portion extending over one of the z-filter media pack flow faces. 7. An air filter cartridge according to claims 6 , wherein the portion extending over one of the z-media pack flow faces comprises a grid work. 8. An air filter cartridge according to claim 7 , wherein the grid work comprises diagonal cross pieces. 9. An air filter cartridge according to claim 7 , wherein the grid work inhibits media telescoping. 10. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the shell includes a portion extending over the outlet flow face of the media pack. 11. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the shell further comprises a funnel surface extending at an angle relative to the media pack. 12. An air filter cartridge according to claim 11 , wherein the angle is within the range of 30° to 60°. 13. An air filter cartridge according to claim 11 , wherein the angle is within the range of 35° to 55°. 14. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein the z-filter media pack non-circular cross section has a pair of opposite sides joined by a pair of curved opposite ends. 15. An air filter cartridge comprising: (a) a z-filter media pack comprising a coiled arrangement of single facer media., wherein the single facer media comprises a fluted media sheet secured to a facing media sheet by a first sealant positioned therebetween, and a second sealant positioned along an opposite side of the facing media sheet from the first sealant, the media pack having an inlet flow face, an outlet flow face, an axial length between the inlet flow face and the outlet flow face, and flutes extending from the inlet flow face to the outlet flow face; wherein the media is closed to the flow of unfiltered air therethrough, wherein the media is closed to the flow of unfiltered air therethrough; (b) a sealing structure located around a periphery of the z-filter media pack between the inlet flow face and the outlet flow face, and wherein at least a portion of the sealing structure is molded to the outer periphery of the z-filter media pack, the sealing structure comprising: (i) a molded member having opposite ends and a sidewall extending therebetween, the sidewall circumscribing the media pack, wherein the media pack is secured within the sidewall, and a seal support extending from the sidewall and located between the media pack inlet flow face and the media pack outlet flow face; (ii) a seal arrangement molded on the seal support; and (c) the z-filter media pack has non-circular cross section taken perpendicularly to a direction of extension of the flutes. 16. An air filter cartridge according to claim 15 , wherein the sidewall has a length from a first end to an opposite second end that is less than the axial length between the inlet flow face to the outlet flow face. 17. An air filter cartridge according to claim 15 , wherein the sidewall is secured to the media pack by the seal arrangement. 18. An air filter cartridge according to claim 15 , wherein the seal arrangement is constructed to provide an axial seal when in sealing engagement with an air cleaner housing. 19. An air filter cartridge according to claim 15 , wherein the molded member includes a portion extending over one of the inlet flow face or the outlet flow face. 20. An air filter cartridge according to claim 15 , wherein the z-filter media pack non-circular cross section has a pair of opposite sides joined by a pair of curved opposite ends. 21. An air filter cartridge according to claim 15 , further comprising: (a) an elongated centerpiece located within the z-filter media pack.
