Provided herein are methods of modulating membrane potential of a cell membrane using self-assembling compounds. Also provided herein are methods of regulating a natural voltage-dependent ion channel in a cell membrane using the self-assembling compounds disclosed herein. Further provided herein are methods of treating, preventing and/or managing a disease that is related to the abnormal membrane potential responses by using the self-assembling compounds disclosed herein.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of modulating membrane potential of a cell membrane comprising: forming a synthetic chloride ion channel in the cell membrane; wherein the synthetic ion channel is formed by a plurality of molecules of a self-assembling compound having formula: wherein D is CH(R) wherein R is: (1) C 1-6 alkyl optionally substituted with NH 2 ; (2) (C 1-6 alkyl)C(═O)(OC 1-6 alkyl); (3) (C 1-6 alkyl)S(C 1-6 alkyl); (4) (C 0-6 alkyl)phenyl; or (5) indolyl; X is C 1-20 alkyl; and k is 1. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the synthetic ion channel is formed by a plurality of molecules of a self-assembling compound having formula wherein X is C 1-20 alkyl. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein X is isobutyl. 4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the self-assembling compound is or a salt or stereoisomer thereof. 5. The method of claim 2 , in which the self-assembling compound is: or any salt or stereoisomer of any thereof.
