Official abstract text for this publication.
An apparatus in accordance with the invention includes a motor and a gearbox coupled to the motor and comprising an output shaft configured to actuate a window covering. A position encoder, directly driven by the output shaft, is configured to measure at least one of an angular position and a number of rotations of the output shaft. The angular position and number of rotations may be used to calculate an angular position of slats of a window blind and/or an amount a window covering is opened or closed. A corresponding method is also disclosed herein.

The invention claimed is: 1. A motorized gearbox assembly comprising: a motor; a power transmission system coupled to the motor, comprising one or more stages of gears; an output shaft driven by the power transmission system that actuates a window covering comprising a window blind with slats, by applying torque to a tilt rod of the window covering, the output shaft the motorized gearbox assembly and comprising a through-channel extending substantially an entire length of the output shaft such that the tilt rod passes entirely through the motorized gearbox assembly; a diametrically polarized magnet, directly driven by the output shaft; a position encoder that measures at least one of an angular position or a number of rotations of the output shaft; and a housing that fits within a headrail of the window blind, the housing enclosing the motor, the power transmission system, the output shaft, the diametrically polarized magnet, and the position encoder. 2. The motorized gearbox assembly of claim 1 wherein the position encoder is a rotary resistive position encoder. 3. The motorized gearbox assembly of claim 1 wherein the position encoder is a rotary magnetic position encoder. 4. The motorized gearbox assembly of claim 1 wherein at least one of the angular position or the number of rotations is stored in non-volatile memory. 5. The motorized gearbox assembly of claim 1 further comprising a processor to calculate an angular position of the slats of the window blind based on at least one of the angular position or the number of rotations. 6. The motorized gearbox assembly of claim 1 wherein the position encoder rotates faster than the output shaft at a rate proportional to a size ratio between a smaller gear and a larger main gear. 7. The motorized gearbox assembly of claim 1 wherein the position encoder is able to determine at least one of the angular position or the number of rotations of the output shaft immediately upon powering up without need for calibration. 8. The motorized gearbox assembly of claim 1 further comprising a counter to keep track of the number of rotations. 9. The motiorized gearbox assembly of claim 1 wherein readings from the position encoder and a motor current sensor are used to estimate a weight of the window covering. 10. A method of using the motorized gearbox assembly of claim 1 , the method comprising: electromechanically driving the output shaft; actuating, using the output shaft, the window covering comprising the window blind with slats; directly driving, by the output shaft, the position encoder to measure at least one of the angular position or the number of rotation of the output shaft. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein actuating the window covering comprises applying torque to the tilt rod of the window blind. 12. The method of claim 10 , wherein directly driving the position encoder comprises directly driving a rotary resistive position encoder. 13. The method of claim 10 , wherein directly driving the position encoder comprises directly driving a rotary magnetic position encoder. 14. The method of claim 10 , further comprising storing at least one of the angular position or the number of rotations in non-volatile memory. 15. The method of claim 10 , further comprising calculating the angular position of the blind slats based on at least one of the angular position or the number of rotations. 16. The method of claim 10 , wherein directly driving the position encoder comprises directly driving the position encoder to rotate faster than the output shaft. 17. The method of claim 10 , further comprising determining at least one of the angular position or the number of rotations of the output shaft immediately upon powering up the position encoder without the need for calibration. 18. The method of claim 10 , further comprising providing a counter to keep track of the number of rotations. 19. The method of claim 10 , further comprising estimating a weight of the window covering using readings from the position encoder and a motor current sensor.
