Various implementations of a fluid collection system having a flexible liner are disclosed. In one exemplary variation, the fluid collection system may include a container having a top opening, a lid configured to close the top opening, and a flexible liner attached to the lid. The liner may be interposed between the lid and the container when the lid closes the top opening. The liner and the lid may define a substantially sealed interior space therebetween. The lid may include an access port through which the interior space receives fluid. The flexible liner may also be configured to controllably collapse as the fluid is removed from the interior space.

We claim: 1. A method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container having a lid and a flexible liner, the method comprising: inserting a fluid collection container into a container receiving housing, the fluid collection container having a liners, wherein the housing includes an opening for communication with a suction source; attaching the fluid collection container to the suction source; attaching the fluid collection container to at least one suction instrument; collecting fluid in the fluid collection container by communicating the suction source with the at least one suction instrument via the fluid collection container; and providing a valve between the suction source and the fluid collection container, wherein the valve is configured to prevent fluid from entering the suction source once the valve is in contact with liquid, and wherein the valve comprises hydrophilic material. 2. The method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 1 , wherein the liner is provided in a collapsed position, the method further comprising: expanding the liner. 3. The method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 2 , wherein expanding the liner includes communicating a suction source with the exterior of the liner to expand the liner. 4. The method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 2 , wherein expanding the liner includes expanding the liner by an amount of collected contents. 5. The method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 1 , wherein providing the valve includes providing a float ball-type valve. 6. The method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 1 , wherein attaching the fluid collection container to the vacuum source occurs automatically upon inserting the fluid collection container into the housing. 7. The method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 1 , wherein the housing includes a cavity into which the liner expands, and wherein expanding the liner of the fluid collection container includes: evacuating an interstitial space between the liner and the interior of the cavity in the housing. 8. The method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 7 , further comprising: maintaining vacuum pressure in the interstitial space between the liner and the interior of the cavity in the collection device while collecting fluid in the fluid collection container. 9. The method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 1 , further comprising: attaching an overflow container to the housing; and collecting fluid in the overflow container. 10. The method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 9 , further comprising: attaching the overflow container to a suction source. 11. The method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 1 , further comprising: sensing when collected fluid reaches a predetermined amount in the liner of the fluid collection container. 12. The method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 11 , further comprising: initiating at least one selected from a group consisting of an audible alarm and a visual alarm when the collected fluid reaches the predetermined amount. 13. The method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 12 , further comprising: if an audible alarm is initiated: discontinuing the audible alarm when a stop button is pushed; and resuming the audible alarm after a predetermined period of time. 14. The method of collecting fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 11 , wherein the predetermined amount is more than 80% of the capacity of the fluid collection container. 15. A method of collecting and evacuating fluid in a fluid collection container having a lid and a flexible liner, the method comprising: inserting a fluid collection container, having the flexible liner collapsed to a first position, into a container receiving housing, wherein the housing includes a suction source; attaching the fluid collection container to the suction source; attaching the fluid collection container to at least one suction instrument; expanding the flexible liner to a second position; collecting fluid in the fluid collection container by applying the suction source to the at least one suction instrument via the fluid collection container; attaching the fluid collection container to a disposal source; collapsing the flexible liner of the collection container to a third position by evacuating at least some of the fluid collected in the fluid collection container into the disposal source. 16. The method of collecting and evacuating fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 15 , further comprising: providing a valve between the suction source and the fluid collection container, wherein the valve is configured to prevent fluid from entering the suction source when the valve is in contact with liquid. 17. The method of collecting and evacuating fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 16 , wherein providing the valve includes providing a valve comprising a hydrophilic material. 18. The method of collecting and evacuating fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 16 , wherein providing the valve includes providing a float ball-type valve. 19. The method of collecting and evacuating fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 15 , wherein expanding the flexible liner to the second position includes communicating a suction source with an exterior of the liner. 20. The method of collecting and evacuating fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 15 , wherein expanding the liner includes expanding the liner proportionately to an amount of collected contents. 21. The method of collecting and evacuating fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 15 , wherein attaching the fluid collection container to the vacuum source occurs automatically upon inserting the fluid collection container into the housing. 22. The method of collecting and evacuating fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 15 , wherein the housing includes a cavity into which the liner expands, and wherein expanding the liner of the fluid collection container includes: evacuating an interstitial space between the liner and the interior of the cavity in the housing. 23. The method of collecting and evacuating fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 22 , further comprising: maintaining vacuum pressure in the interstitial space between the liner and the interior of the cavity in the housing while collecting fluid in the fluid collection container. 24. The method of collecting and evacuating fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 15 , further comprising: attaching an overflow container to the housing; and collecting fluid in the overflow container. 25. The method of collecting and evacuating fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 15 , further comprising: attaching the overflow container to a suction source. 26. The method of collecting and evacuating fluid in a fluid collection container according to claim 15 , further comprising: sensing when the fluid collec
