A method and apparatus for an adjustable suspension system for a vehicle comprises at least one strut. In one embodiment, the stanchion (or slider) is non-uniform with a major and minor circumferential stiffness and is adjustable relative to a fore and aft axis of the vehicle in order to provide a differing amount of stiffness relative thereto. In another embodiment, a portion of the stanchion is circular and a reinforcement is annularly disposed therearound with axial retention formations, The reinforcement has a non-uniform circumferential characteristic and is rotatable relative to the fore/aft axis of the vehicle.

The invention claimed is: 1. A suspension for a vehicle comprising: a strut assembly including a first and a second longitudinal reinforcement member, the first longitudinal reinforcement member disposed within the second longitudinal reinforcement member and the longitudinal reinforcement members are rotatable between a first position in which the strut has a first stiffness in a plane substantially aligned with an up and down and a fore and aft direction relative to the vehicle and a second position in which the strut has a second stiffness, in the direction of the plane, the second stiffness being lower than the first stiffness; and a selectively engageable orientation retainer for selectively retaining the longitudinal reinforcement members in the first position and the second position. 2. The suspension system of claim 1 , wherein the second reinforcement member is non-circular with a major and a minor dimension and the first stiffness in the first position results from the major dimension being substantially aligned with the plane. 3. The suspension of claim 1 , wherein a first portion of the second reinforcement member includes a circular outer surface and a second portion of the second reinforcement member includes a non-circular outer surface, the first portion defining an axial region of the second reinforcement member retained by the orientation retainer in the first and second positions. 4. The suspension of claim 1 , wherein the first reinforcement member is a stanchion, the stanchion including a plurality of grooves on an exterior thereof, wherein the second reinforcement member includes a plurality of grooves formed on an interior thereof for mating with the plurality of grooves on the stanchion. 5. A method for altering a stiffness of a vehicle suspension comprising: rotating a first and a second longitudinal reinforcement member from a first position to a second position to enhance suspension stiffness in a plane substantially aligned with a fore and aft direction and an up and down direction relative to the vehicle, wherein the first longitudinal reinforcement member is disposed within the second longitudinal reinforcement member; and selectively retaining the longitudinal reinforcement member in the first and second position. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein an orientation retainer engages to the second longitudinal reinforcement member to retain the longitudinal reinforcement members in the first and second position. 7. An apparatus for selective stiffness of a vehicle suspension, comprising: a stanchion for receiving a slider, the stanchion having an outer surface in at least one area including axial retention formations formed thereon; a reinforcement for at least partially surrounding the stanchion, the reinforcement having a set of mating axial retention formations formed on an interior thereof whereby the formations substantially prevent axial movement of the stanchion relative to the reinforcement; and a clamp for clamping the reinforcement to the stanchion, wherein the reinforcement is rotationally movable about the stanchion when the clamp is unclamped. 8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the axial retention formations and mating formations comprise a plurality of complementary grooves on the stanchion and the reinforcement. 9. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein a first portion of the outer surface of the reinforcement is non-circular, a second portion of the outer surface of the reinforcement is circular, and the second portion is adjacent to the clamp. 10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the mating formations permit rotation between the reinforcement and the stanchion. 11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the rotation permits a major axis of the first non-circular portion of the reinforcement to be arranged between a position parallel to a major axis of the vehicle and a position perpendicular thereto.
