Disclosed is a composition containing an active ingredient or ingredients comprising an extract or extracts of one or more constituents selected from the group consisting of Astragalus membranaceus, Saururus chinensis, Glycyrrhizae radix , rose, rhubarb, Acanthopanax senticosus and cortex Phellodendri . The composition is efficacious in suppressing acneiform pigment deposition and/or pitted scars, and can be used to advantage in various ways in the fields of cosmetics, foods and drugs.

We claim: 1. A method for suppressing acne scars comprising administering an effective amount of a composition comprising one or more extracts selected from the group consisting of Astragalus membranaceus and Saururus chinensis to a subject in need thereof, wherein the one or more extracts suppresses gelatinase. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises an extract of Glycyrrhizae radix. 3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein one or more extracts selected from the group consisting of Astragalus membranaceus, Saururus chinensis , and Glycyrrhizae radix is present in the composition in an amount of 0.1-20 wt % based on the total weight of the composition. 4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the composition is a composition for external skin application. 5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the composition is a cosmetic composition. 6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the composition is a pharmaceutical composition. 7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the composition is a food additive or health food composition.
