Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A device for filtering emboli from blood flowing through a lumen defined by the walls of a vessel in a patient's body. The device has a filter element being expandable from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration. The filter element includes a material having pores, and the material having pores includes cylindrical wires having at least three different diameters arranged in a pattern of graduated diameters.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A device for filtering emboli from a patient's vasculature, comprising: a filter element repositionable between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration, the filter element comprising a plurality of cylindrical strands woven together such that the filter element defines a plurality of pores, wherein the plurality of cylindrical strands includes a first strand consisting of a first metal filament defining a first filament diameter, and a second strand consisting of a second metal filament defining a second filament diameter, wherein the first filament diameter is greater than the second filament diameter, wherein the plurality of cylindrical strands further includes a third strand consisting of a third metal filament defining a third filament diameter. 2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the third filament diameter is different than at least one of the first filament diameter and the second filament diameter. 3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the second filament diameter is greater than the third filament diameter. 4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the pores are uniform in size. 5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the pores are non-uniform in size. 6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the filter element is self-expanding. 7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first metal filament comprises nitinol and the second metal filament comprises nitinol.
