Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A dielectric wave guide (DWG) has a dielectric core member that has a first dielectric constant value. A cladding surrounding the dielectric core member has a second dielectric constant value that is lower than the first dielectric constant. A mating end of the DWG is configured for mating with a second DWG having a matching non-planar shaped mating end. A deformable material is disposed on the surface of the mating end of the DWG, such that when mated to a second DWG, the deformable material fills a gap region between the mating ends of the DWG and the second DWG.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A dielectric waveguide assembly comprising: (a) a dielectric waveguide having a longitudinal dielectric core member, the core member having a first dielectric constant value, and cladding surrounding the dielectric core member, the cladding having a second dielectric constant value that is lower than the first dielectric constant value, the waveguide having a mating surface at one end of the core member and the cladding; (b) a connector having a portion fixed on the waveguide close to the mating surface and having a mating portion, that is free of the cladding, extending beyond the mating surface; and (c) a deformable member part engaged with the mating surface of the waveguide. 2. The assembly of claim 1 in which the deformable member has a dielectric constant value that is selected from a range between approximately 3-12. 3. The assembly of claim 1 in which the deformable member is an unsaturated rubber. 4. The assembly of claim 1 in which the deformable member is a saturated rubber. 5. The assembly of claim 1 in which the deformable member is silicone. 6. The assembly of claim 1 in which the mating surface has a V shape. 7. The assembly of claim 1 in which the deformable member has a dielectric constant value that is selected from a range between approximately the first dielectric constant value and the second dielectric constant value. 8. A dielectric waveguide assembly comprising: (a) a first dielectric waveguide having a first longitudinal dielectric core member, the first core member having a first dielectric constant value, and a first cladding surrounding the dielectric core member, the first cladding having a second dielectric constant value that is lower than the first dielectric constant value, the first waveguide having a first mating surface of the first core member and the first cladding at an end of the first waveguide; (b) a second dielectric waveguide having a second longitudinal dielectric core member, the second core member having a third dielectric constant value, and a second cladding surrounding the second core member, the second cladding having a fourth dielectric constant value that is lower than the third dielectric constant value, the second waveguide having a second mating surface of the second core member and the second cladding at an end of the second waveguide; (c) a first connector fixed on the first waveguide close to the first mating surface and having a first mating portion extending beyond the first mating surface; (d) a second connector fixed on the second waveguide close to the second mating surface and having a second mating portion extending beyond the second mating surface, the mating portion of the second connector engaging with the mating portion of the first connector; and (e) a deformable member part engaged between the mating surfaces of the core members and claddings of the first and second waveguides. 9. The assembly of claim 8 in which the deformable member is silicone. 10. The assembly of claim 8 in which the mating surfaces have a V shape. 11. The assembly of claim 8 in which the deformable member has a dielectric constant value that is selected from a range between approximately the first dielectric constant value and the second dielectric constant value. 12. The assembly of claim 8 in which the deformable member has a dielectric constant value that is selected from a range between approximately 3-12. 13. The assembly of claim 8 in which the deformable member is an unsaturated rubber. 14. The assembly of claim 8 in which the deformable member is a saturated rubber.
