According to one embodiment, there is provided an active material. The active material contains a composite oxide represented by a following general formula: the general formula: Li x (Nb 1−y Ta y ) 2−z Ti 1+0.5z M 0.5z O 7 , in which 0≦x≦5, 0≦y≦1, and 0<z≦1, and M is at least one metal element selected from the group consisting of Mo and W.

What is claimed is: 1. An active material comprising a composite oxide of formula: Li x (Nb 1−y Ta y ) 2−z Ti 1+0.5z M 0.5z O 7 , wherein 0≦x≦5, 0≦y≦1, and 0.4≦z≦1, and M is at least one metal element selected from the group consisting of Mo and W. 2. The active material according to claim 1 , wherein a specific surface area of the composite oxide is from 0.1 to 100 m 2 /g. 3. A nonaqueous electrolyte battery comprising: a negative electrode comprising the active material according to claim 1 ; a positive electrode; and a nonaqueous electrolyte. 4. A battery pack comprising at least one nonaqueous electrolyte battery, wherein the at least one nonaqueous electrolyte battery comprises a negative electrode comprising the active material according to claim 1 , a positive electrode and a nonaqueous electrolyte. 5. The battery pack according to claim 4 , comprising a plurality of nonaqueous electrolyte batteries, wherein each of the plurality of nonaqueous electrolyte batteries comprises a negative electrode comprising the active material according to claim 1 , a positive electrode and a nonaqueous electrolyte. 6. The battery pack according to claim 5 , wherein the plurality of the nonaqueous electrolyte batteries are electrically connected to each other in series. 7. The battery pack according to claim 5 , wherein the plurality of the nonaqueous electrolyte batteries are electrically connected to each other in parallel. 8. The battery pack according to claim 5 , wherein the plurality of the nonaqueous electrolyte batteries are electrically connected to each other in a combination of in series and in parallel. 9. The battery pack according to claim 5 , wherein the plurality of the nonaqueous electrolyte batteries are electrically connected to each other in series, in parallel or in a combination thereof. 10. The battery pack according to claim 4 , further comprising: a protective circuit configured to detect a voltage of the nonaqueous electrolyte battery. 11. The battery pack according to claim 1 , wherein x is 0, y is 0 and z is 0.4.
