Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods and apparatus to determine media impressions using distributed demographic information are disclosed. An method includes sending to a client computer, via a processor serving a first internet domain, a response to a first request, the first request sent to the first internet domain and indicative of access to media at the client computer, the response to instruct the client computer to send a second request to an intermediary serving a sub-domain of a second internet domain, the second request to be indicative of the access to the media at the client computer, wherein the intermediary is to transmit first data about the second request to a data collection server of an audience measurement entity and second data about the second request to an entity of the second internet domain and logging an impression of the media.

What is claimed is: 1. A method to monitor media exposure, the method comprising: sending to a client computer, by executing an instruction with a processor serving a first internet domain, a response to a first request, the first request received at the first internet domain and indicative of access to media at the client computer, the response to instruct the client computer to send a second request to an intermediary serving a sub-domain of a second internet domain, the second request to be indicative of the access to the media at the client computer, wherein the intermediary is to transmit first data about the second request to a data collection server of an audience measurement entity and second data about the second request to an entity of the second internet domain, wherein the intermediary is to, in response to determining that the second request does not include a cookie associated with the second internet domain, send a second response to the client computer, the second response to instruct the client computer to send a third request to a second intermediary associated with a second sub-domain of a third internet domain, the third request indicative of the access to the media at the client computer; and logging an impression of the media. 2. The method as defined in claim 1 , further including receiving information about the second request from the entity of the second internet domain. 3. The method as defined in claim 1 , further including excluding a parameter of the second request from the second data. 4. The method as defined in claim 3 , wherein the parameter is an identification of a referrer. 5. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the third request includes a cookie associated with the third internet domain. 6. The method as defined in claim 5 , wherein the second intermediary is to transmit third data about the third request to the data collection server and the third data includes the cookie. 7. The method as defined in claim 5 , further including excluding identifying data included in the cookie from the first data. 8. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the intermediary transmits the first data to the data collection server in a batch with data about multiple requests from multiple clients. 9. A system to monitor media exposure, the system comprising: an impression monitor of a first internet domain to: send to a client computer a response to a first request, the first request to be received at the first internet domain and to be indicative of access to media at the client computer, the response to instruct the client computer to send a second request to an intermediary serving a sub-domain of a second internet domain, the second request to be indicative of the access to the media at the client computer, and log an impression of the media; and the intermediary to: transmit first data about the second request to a data collection server of an audience measurement entity and to transmit second data about the second request to an entity of the second internet domain, and in response to determining that the second request does not include a cookie associated with the second internet domain, send a second response to the client computer, the second response to instruct the client computer to send a third request to a second intermediary associated with a second sub-domain of a third internet domain, the third request indicative of the access to the media at the client computer. 10. The system as defined in claim 9 , wherein the impression monitor is further to receive information about the second request from the entity of the second internet domain. 11. The system as defined in claim 9 , wherein the intermediary is to exclude a parameter of the second request from the second data. 12. The system as defined in claim 11 , wherein the parameter is an identification of a referrer. 13. The system as defined in claim 9 , wherein the third request includes a cookie associated with the third internet domain. 14. The system as defined in claim 13 , wherein the second intermediary is to transmit third data about the third request to the data collection server and the third data includes the cookie. 15. The system as defined in claim 14 , wherein the intermediary is to exclude identifying data included in the cookie from the first data. 16. The system as defined in claim 9 , wherein the intermediary is to transmit the first data to the data collection server in a batch with data about multiple requests from multiple clients. 17. A tangible computer readable storage disc or storage device comprising instructions that, when executed, cause a processor at a first internet domain to at least: send to a client computer a response to a first request, the first request received at the first internet domain and indicative of access to media at the client computer, the response to instruct the client computer to send a second request to an intermediary serving a sub-domain of a second internet domain, the second request to be indicative of the access to the media at the client computer, wherein the intermediary is to transmit first data about the second request to a data collection server of an audience measurement entity and second data about the second request to an entity of the second internet domain, wherein the intermediary is to, in response to determining that the second request does not include a cookie associated with the second internet domain, send a second response to the client computer, the second response to instruct the client computer to send a third request to a second intermediary associated with a second sub-domain of a third internet domain, the third request indicative of the access to the media at the client computer; and log an impression of the media. 18. The tangible computer readable storage disc or storage device as defined in claim 17 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the processor to receive information about the second request from the entity of the second internet domain. 19. The tangible computer readable storage disc or storage device as defined in claim 18 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the processor to exclude a parameter of the second request from the second data. 20. The tangible computer readable storage disc or storage device as defined in claim 19 , wherein the parameter is an identification of a referrer. 21. The tangible computer readable storage disc or storage device as defined in claim 18 , wherein the second request includes a cookie associated with the third internet domain. 22. The tangible computer readable storage disc or storage device as defined in claim 21 , wherein the second intermediary is to transmit third data about the third request to the data collection server and the third data includes the cookie. 23. The tangible computer readable storage disc or storage device as defined in claim 22 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the processor to exclude identifying data included in the cookie from the first data. 24. The tangible computer readable storage disc or storage device as defined in claim 17 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the processor to transmit the first data to the data collection server in a batch with data about multiple requests from multiple clients.
