A printer includes a discharge unit, a first printing unit disposed along a sheet conveying path extending from the discharge unit and configured to print an image on a first sheet while the first sheet is conveyed from the discharge unit to the first printing unit and then to the discharge unit, a second printing unit disposed farther from the discharge unit than the first printing unit along the sheet conveyance path and configured to print an image on a second sheet while the second sheet is conveyed towards the discharge unit therethrough, a scanning unit disposed along the sheet conveying path between the discharge unit and the first printing unit, and configured to scan a surface of the first sheet, and a control unit configured to perform a shading correction of the scanning unit using the second sheet as a white reference.

What is claimed is: 1. A printer comprising: a discharge opening; a first printing unit disposed along a sheet conveying path extending from the discharge opening and configured to print an image on a first sheet while the first sheet is conveyed from the discharge opening to the first printing unit and then to the discharge opening; a second printing unit disposed farther from the discharge opening than the first printing unit along the sheet conveyance path and configured to print an image on a second sheet while the second sheet is conveyed towards the discharge opening there through; a scanning unit disposed along the sheet conveying path between the discharge opening and the first printing unit, and configured to scan a surface of the first sheet; and a control unit configured to perform a shading correction of the scanning unit using the second sheet as a white reference without printing the image on the second sheet with the second printing unit. 2. The printer according to claim 1 , further comprising: a recovery unit, wherein the control unit is further configured to cause the second sheet used as the white reference for the shading correction to be conveyed to the recovery unit. 3. The printer according to claim 1 , wherein the control unit is further configured to determine whether to perform the shading correction based on timing of a previous shading correction. 4. The printer according to claim 3 , wherein the control unit determines whether to perform the shading correction before the first sheet reaches the scanning unit, when the first sheet is conveyed to the first printing unit for printing. 5. The printer according to claim 3 , wherein the control unit determines whether to perform the shading correction before the second sheet reaches the second printing unit, when the second sheet is conveyed to the second printing unit for printing. 6. The printer according to claim 1 , wherein the shading correction is performed using a region of the second sheet on which no image is printed, as the white reference. 7. The printer according to claim 1 , wherein the first printing unit is a dot matrix printing unit, and the second printing unit is a thermal printing unit. 8. A method for operating a printer having a discharge opening, a first printing unit disposed along a sheet conveying path extending from the discharge opening, a second printing unit disposed farther from the discharge opening than the first printing unit along the sheet conveyance path, and a scanning unit disposed along the sheet conveying path between the discharge opening and the first printing unit and configured to scan a surface of a sheet, the method comprising: conveying a sheet to the scanning unit through the second printing unit and then through the first printing unit; and performing a shading correction of the scanning unit using the sheet as a white reference without printing an image on the sheet with the second printing unit. 9. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising: conveying the sheet to a recovery unit of the printer after the shading correction ends. 10. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising: determining whether to perform the shading correction based on timing of a previous shading correction, wherein the shading correction is performed based on the determination. 11. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising: conveying a second sheet from the discharge opening towards the first printing unit; stopping conveyance of the second sheet before the second sheet reaches the scanning unit, wherein the determining is carried out while the conveyance of the second sheet is stopped. 12. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising: the determining is carried out before the sheet is conveyed to the second printing unit. 13. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the shading correction is performed using a region of the sheet on which no image is printed, as the white reference. 14. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the first printing unit is a dot matrix printing unit, and the second printing unit is a thermal printing unit.
