An indicia reader is adapted for hand held operation to read information bearing indicia (IBI) at a point of transaction (POT) and is operated by: configuring the indicia reader in a store to provide at least one store specific indicia read notice; reading an IBI at a POT with the indicia reader and providing the at least one store specific indicia read notice to a customer when each IBI is read.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method, comprising: reading a symbol at a point of transaction with an indicia reader; and if the symbol read with the indicia reader is a target symbol, providing a symbol-specific read notice for the target symbol to a customer; wherein the symbol-specific read notice for the target symbol is based on information encoded in the target symbol; and wherein the symbol-specific read notice comprises distinctive beeper tones, customized music, a distinctive LED blink mode, and/or a vibration with a special period. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the symbol-specific read notice comprises a distinctive beeper tone. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the symbol-specific read notice informs the customer if the barcode is scanned or not. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the symbol-specific read notice is defined by rules defined by a store based on the information encoded in the barcode. 5. The method of claim 1 , comprising configuring the indicia reader at the point of transaction to provide the symbol-specific read notice for the target symbol. 6. The method of claim 1 , comprising configuring the indicia reader at the point of transaction to provide the symbol-specific read notice for the target symbol by reading a symbol carried by a customer. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the symbol-specific read notice comprises at least one of the following: a price of the item bearing the target symbol; a description of the item bearing the target symbol; an item on sale notification; and sales savings information. 8. The method of claim 1 , comprising: creating a symbol-specific read notice configuration setting profile; and downloading the symbol-specific read notice configuration setting profile to the indicia reader. 9. The method of claim 8 , comprising: creating the symbol-specific read notice configuration setting profile in a first indicia reader; uploading the symbol-specific read notice configuration setting profile to a host server; and downloading the symbol-specific read notice configuration setting profile to another indicia reader in communication with the host server. 10. The method of claim 8 , comprising: creating the symbol-specific read notice configuration setting profile in a first indicia reader; and uploading the symbol-specific read notice configuration setting profile to another indicia reader in communication with the first indicia reader. 11. The method of claim 8 , comprising: creating the symbol-specific read notice configuration setting profile by reading a symbol carried by a customer, wherein the symbol-specific read notice configuration setting profile comprises a language; and configuring the indicia reader to provide the symbol-specific read notice in the language. 12. An indicia reader, comprising: an indicia reading assembly for reading a symbol; a notification device for notifying a customer when a symbol is read; a memory storing program instructions; and a processor for executing the program instructions, wherein, when the processor executes the program instructions, the indicia reader: reads a symbol at a point of transaction with the indicia reading assembly; if the symbol read with the indicia reading assembly is a target symbol, provides a symbol-specific read notice for the target symbol to a customer with the notification device; wherein the symbol-specific read notice for the target symbol is based on information encoded in the target symbol; and wherein the symbol-specific read notice comprises distinctive beeper tones, customized music, a distinctive LED blink mode, and/or a vibration with a special period. 13. The indicia reader of claim 12 , wherein the program instructions are stored onto the memory at the point of transaction. 14. The indicia reader of claim 12 , wherein, when the processor executes the program instructions, the indicia reader configures the indicia reader to provide the symbol-specific read notice for the target symbol in response to reading a symbol carried by a customer. 15. The indicia reader of claim 12 , wherein the symbol-specific read notice comprises at least one of the following: a price of the item bearing the target symbol; a description of the item bearing the target symbol; an item on sale notification; and sales savings information. 16. The indicia reader of claim 12 , wherein, when the processor executes the program instructions, the indicia reader acquires a configuration setting from a host server to determine the symbol-specific read notice. 17. The indicia reader of claim 12 , wherein, when the processor executes the program instructions, the indicia reader acquires a configuration setting from another indicia reader to determine the symbol-specific read notice. 18. The indicia reader of claim 12 , wherein: the symbol-specific read notice configuration setting profile comprises a language; and when the processor executes the program instructions, the indicia reader configures the indicia reader to provide the symbol-specific read notice in the language for the target symbol in response to reading a symbol carried by a customer. 19. The indicia reader of claim 12 , wherein the symbol-specific read notice comprises a distinctive beeper tone. 20. The indicia reader of claim 12 , wherein the symbol-specific read notice informs the customer if the barcode is scanned or not.
