Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Disclosed is an apparatus for loading one or more alloy ingots into a molding machine. The apparatus includes a holder configured to hold a plurality of the alloy ingots and dispense one or more of the alloy ingots into a melt zone of the molding machine through an opening in a mold of the machine. The holder is moved in a perpendicular direction with respect to an axis along a center of the opening in the mold between a first position in line with the opening in the mold to dispense one or more of the alloy ingots and a second position away from the opening in the mold. The apparatus can carry ingots of amorphous alloy material so that when the machine melts and molds the material, it forms a bulk amorphous alloy containing part.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for forming a part, comprising: loading one or more ingots from a holder into a melt zone of a molding machine through an opening in a mold plate of the molding machine, the mold plate defining a portion of a mold cavity; melting the one or more ingots in the melt zone to form a molten material; and introducing the molten material into the mold cavity to form the part. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein: the holder comprises a drive mechanism; and the method further comprises: moving the holder to a first position in which at least a portion of the holder is in line with the opening in the mold plate; while the holder is in the first position, performing the operation of loading the one or more ingots into the melt zone; and moving the holder to a second position in which the portion of the holder is away from the opening in the mold plate. 3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the operation of moving the holder to the first position comprises moving the holder in a perpendicular direction with respect to an axis along a center of the opening in the mold plate. 4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the operation of moving the holder to the first position comprises moving the holder in a vertical direction. 5. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the operation of moving the holder to the first position comprises moving the holder in a horizontal direction. 6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the operation of loading the one or more ingots comprises moving the one or more ingots in a horizontal direction. 7. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising melting the one or more ingots in the melt zone using an induction source. 8. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising applying a vacuum to at least the melt zone during the operation of melting the one or more ingots. 9. A method, comprising: positioning a feedstock holder in a first position relative to a first mold plate at least partially defining a mold cavity; pushing one or more ingots through an opening in the first mold plate; positioning the feedstock holder in a second position relative to the first mold plate; positioning a second mold plate relative to the first mold plate to define the mold cavity; heating the one or more ingots, thereby forming a heated material; and introducing the heated material into the mold cavity. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein: the feedstock holder comprises a magazine holding the one or more ingots; and pushing the one or more ingots through the opening in the first mold plate comprises ejecting the one or more ingots from the magazine. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein ejecting the one or more ingots from the magazine comprises pushing the one or more ingots with a plunger. 12. The method of claim 10 , wherein: the one or more ingots are stacked substantially vertically in the magazine; and the method further comprises dropping the one or more ingots into a loading position in the feedstock holder using gravity. 13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the operation of positioning the feedstock holder in the first position comprises moving the feedstock holder in a horizontal direction. 14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the operation of heating the one or more ingots comprises melting the one or more ingots. 15. A method, comprising: moving a holder to a first position at least partially between a first mold portion and a second mold portion of a mold; dispensing a solid feedstock through an opening in the first mold portion and into a melt zone; moving the holder to a second position that is not between the first and second mold portions; closing the mold to define a cavity between the first and second mold portions; and injecting a softened material formed from the solid feedstock into the mold cavity to form a part. 16. The method of claim 15 , wherein: the solid feedstock is a first solid feedstock; the softened material is a first softened material; the part is a first part; and the method further comprises: after injecting the first softened material into the mold cavity to form the first part, separating the first and second mold portions; releasing the first part from the mold cavity; moving the holder to the first portion; dispensing a second solid feedstock into the melt zone through the opening in the first mold portion; moving the holder to the second position; closing the mold to define the cavity; and injecting a second softened material formed from the second solid feedstock into the mold cavity to form a second part. 17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the solid feedstock comprises one or more ingots. 18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the operation of dispensing the solid feedstock into the melt zone comprises pushing the solid feedstock through the opening in the first mold portion. 19. The method of claim 18 , wherein pushing the solid feedstock through the opening in the first mold portion comprises pushing the solid feedstock with a telescoping actuator. 20. The method of claim 15 , wherein the operation of dispensing the solid feedstock into the melt zone comprises applying a burst of air to the solid feedstock to force the solid feedstock into the melt zone.
