A flat filter element has a filter medium and a sealing section that seals the flat filter element relative to a filter housing. A support element section is arranged on a circumferential side of the filter medium outside of the sealing section and supports the flat filter element relative to an inner side of the filter housing, wherein the support element section projects past the filter element in at least one direction. The filter housing has a mounting opening through which the flat filter element is inserted into the interior where the flat filter element is arranged such that the inlet is separated from the outlet of the filter housing. A projection arranged on an inner side of the filter housing supports under mechanical tension the support element section of the flat filter element in a mounting position of the flat filter element in the interior.

What is claimed is: 1. A flat filter element for insertion into a filter housing, the filter element comprising: a raw side and an opposing clean side, wherein flow direction of fluid to be filtered is from the raw side to the clean side; a pleated filter medium folded in a zigzag shape into a course of zigzag shaped pleat folds forming a filter bellows, the pleated filter medium continuing from a first outer fold forming an upper end face of the filter bellows to a last outer fold forming a lower end face of the filter medium: a first set of pleat fold edges arranged at a raw end face where fluid to be filtered entered the pleated filter medium; a second set of pleat fold edges arranged at a clean end face where filtered fluid exits the pleated filter medium, the clean end face spaced apart from the raw end face in the flow direction; a first side end face arranged on a zigzag filter medium edge which follows the course of zigzag shaped pleat folds forming the filter bellows, and arranged traverse to the pleat fold edges; an opposing second side end face arranged on an opposing zigzag filter medium edge if the course of zigzag shaped pleat folds forming the filter bellows, the second side end face spaced apart from the first side end face such that the pleat fold edges extend from the first side end face to the second side end face; a sealing section adapted to seal the flat filter element relative to a filter housing; at least one carrier plate that is adhesively secured directly onto or welded directly onto the zigzag filter medium edge of the zigzag shaped pleat folds on the first side end face or second side end face of the filter medium; at least one elongated support element arranged inbetween the raw end face and the clean end face and elongated in a direction traverse to the flow direction, each of the at least one elongated support element arranged directly on secured directly onto the at least one carrier plate, the at least one elongated support element elongated in a plane parallel to the at least one carrier plate, the at least one elongated support element having: a first support element section at a first end of the at least one elongated support element, the first support element section elongated in the direction of the at least one elongated support element to extend outwardly beyond the upper end face of the filter bellows; a second support element section arranged at an opposing end of the at least one elongated support element opposite the first support element section, the second support element section elongated in the direction of the at least one elongated support element to extend outwardly beyond the lower end face of the filter bellows; wherein the first and second elongated support element sections are configured to contact and support in opposite directions traverse to the inflow direction against an interior of the filter housing and support the filter element on the interior of the filter housing. 2. The flat filter element according to claim 1 , wherein a support gap exists on the at least one elongated support element between the first and second support element sections. 3. The flat filter element according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one carrier plate is of a plastic material. 4. The flat filter element according to claim 3 , wherein a lateral strip is secured onto the filter medium at either the first or second side end face of the filter medium, the lateral strip arranged between the filter medium and the carrier plate, wherein the carrier plate is secured by the lateral strip onto the filter medium. 5. The flat filter element according to claim 4 , wherein the lateral strip comprises a nonwoven fibrous web of material. 6. The flat filter element according to claim 1 , wherein the lateral strip secured onto the filter medium at either the first side end face or the second side end face of the filter medium, wherein the first support element section is attached to the lateral strip. 7. The flat filter element according to claim 6 , wherein the lateral strip comprises a nonwoven fibrous web of material. 8. The flat filter element according to claim 2 , wherein the at least one of the first and second support element sections are elastically movable and/or deformable relative to the filter medium in a direction transversely to an insertion direction of the flat filter element into the filter housing. 9. The flat filter element according to claim 1 , wherein the sealing section comprises a seal that is arranged at and connected to a first end of the filter medium and seals the flat filter element relative to the filter housing, wherein the at least one support element section is arranged on a second end of the filter medium that is facing away from the seal. 10. A filter housing of an air filter, the filter housing comprising: at least one inlet for air to be purified; at least one outlet for purified air; a flat filter element according to claim 1 received into an interior of the filter housing such the at least one inlet is separated from the at least one outlet by the flat filter element; a mounting opening through which the flat filter element is insertable into the interior; a projection arranged on an inner side of the filter housing and adapted to support under mechanical tension a support element section of the flat filter element in a mounting position of the flat filter element in the interior. 11. The filter housing according to claim 10 , wherein at least two of said projection are provided and are arranged on the first inner side and an oppositely positioned inner side of the filter housing, respectively, wherein said at least two projections support between them two of said support element section of the flat filter element at least in opposite directions. 12. The filter housing according to claim 10 , further comprising at least one guide web arranged on a second inner side of the filter housing, wherein the at least one guide web extends in an insertion direction of the flat filter element and comprises a top side facing the flat filter element, wherein the top side first extends in the insertion direction away from the second inner side and, after a bend, descends in front of the projection toward the second inner side.
