Porphyrin-modified antimicrobial peptides as described here may be used as indicators of the presence of microbial targets. Their application may be as (for example) (1) fluorescent indicators in a microarray format, (2) fluorescence or absorbance based indicators in traditional solution based applications, or (3) reflectance based indicators for use in reagent-less detection platforms.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of detecting bacterial cells, comprising: providing a porphyrin-modified antimicrobial peptide comprising a porphyrin covalently attached to an antimicrobial peptide; contacting the porphyrin-modified antimicrobial peptide in a microtiter plate with the bacterial cells, thereby causing a conformational change in the porphyrin-modified antimicrobial peptide; and detecting with a microtiter plate reader a change in fluorescence and/or absorbance of the porphyrin-modified antimicrobial peptide caused by the conformational change, corresponding to a presence or absence of the bacterial cells, wherein the method is operable to detect the bacterial cells without use of an additional optically-active reagent, wherein the porphyrin is 5-mono(4-carboxyphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenyl porphine and the antimicrobial peptide is covalently attached to the porphyrin via carbodiimide-mediated coupling, and wherein said antimicrobial peptide is Indolicidin or Cecropin A-melittin hybrid peptide CeMe(L).
