The invention claimed is: 1. A food composition comprising: a biologically pure culture of strain Bifidobacterium pseudolongum AHC7, NCIMB 41199, or mutant strain thereof, wherein the strain has probiotic activity in a companion animal selected from a canine, a feline, a rabbit, a ferret, a horse, and a cow; and a component comprising protein, fat, and carbohydrate, wherein the food composition is in a form selected from a biscuit, a kibble, a yogurt, a gravy, and any combination thereof, and further wherein the Bifidobacterium pseudolongum strain survives and colonizes the gastrointestinal tract of the companion animal. 2. The food composition according to claim 1 , wherein the strain adheres to gut epithelial cells of the companion animal at a level of at least 4%. 3. The food composition according to claim 1 , wherein the strain has a growth of at least 33% in the presence of 0.5% bile salts. 4. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the strain is able to maintain viability following 1 hour at pH 2.5. 5. The food composition of claim 1 , wherein the mutant strain is a natural, genetically modified, or induced mutant strain. 6. The food composition of claim 1 , wherein the companion animal is a dog. 7. The food composition of claim 1 , wherein the companion animal is a cat. 8. A composition comprising a biologically pure culture of strain Bifidobacterium pseudolongum AHC7, NCIMB 41199, or a mutant strain thereof, and a food composition comprising protein, fat, and carbohydrate, wherein the food composition is in a form selected from a biscuit, a kibble, a yogurt, a gravy, a dairy product, and any combination thereof; wherein the strain is present in an amount effective to have probiotic activity in a companion animal selected from a canine, a feline, a rabbit, a ferret, a horse, and a cow, and wherein the strain survives and colonizes the gastrointestinal tract of the companion animal. 9. The composition according to claim 8 , wherein the strain adheres to gut epithelial cells of the companion animal at a level of at least 4%. 10. The composition according to claim 8 , wherein the strain has a growth of at least 33% in the presence of 0.5% bile salts. 11. The composition according to claim 8 , wherein the strain is able to maintain viability following 1 hour at pH 2.5. 12. The composition according to claim 8 , wherein the mutant strain is a natural, genetically modified, or induced mutant strain. 13. The composition according to claim 8 , wherein the companion animal is a dog. 14. The composition according to claim 8 , wherein the companion animal is a cat. 15. The composition according to claim 8 , wherein the composition is a companion animal food. 16. The composition according to claim 15 , wherein the composition is a dog food. 17. The composition according to claim 15 , wherein the composition is a cat food. 18. The composition according to claim 8 , wherein the composition is a gravy. 19. The composition according to claim 8 , further comprising at least one of a metabolite, a homogenate, a protein, an extract, and a ferment supernatant of the strain Bifidobacterium pseudolongum AHC7, NCIMB 41199, or a mutant strain thereof. 20. A composition comprising: the isolated strain of Bifidobacterium pseudolongum AHC7, NCIMB 41199; and a component comprising protein, fat, and carbohydrate, wherein the composition is in a form selected from a biscuit, a kibble, a yogurt, a gravy, and any combination thereof, wherein the isolated strain has probiotic activity in a companion animal selected from a canine, a feline, a rabbit, a ferret, a horse, and a cow, and wherein the strain survives and colonizes the gastrointestinal tract of the companion animal.
