Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An article grouping system is disclosed. The article grouping system includes a transport member movable in a first direction and an outfeed carrier apparatus having an outfeed carrier surface that is movable in a second direction. The transport member is positioned proximate to the outfeed carrier surface. The article grouping system includes a transfer apparatus having a frame and an article stabilization member operatively connected with the frame. The article stabilization member includes upstream and downstream support members spaced apart from the downstream support member in the second direction to define an article transfer receptacle. The article stabilization member moves from an engaging location proximate to the transport member to a variable disengaging location adjacent to the outfeed carrier surface and back to the engaging location.

What is claimed is: 1. An article grouping system comprising: a transport member movable in a first direction; an outfeed carrier apparatus having an outfeed carrier surface that is movable in a second direction, wherein the transport member is positionable proximate to a portion of the outfeed carrier surface; a transfer apparatus comprising: a frame; an article stabilization member operatively connected with the frame, wherein the article stabilization member comprises upstream and downstream support members, wherein the upstream support member is spaced apart from the downstream support member in the second direction to define an article transfer receptacle capable of receiving a plurality of articles from the transport member; a transfer apparatus drive mechanism operatively connected with an arm; and a transfer apparatus control system operatively engaged with the transfer apparatus drive mechanism, wherein the transfer apparatus control system causes the transfer apparatus drive mechanism to move the article stabilization member from an engaging location proximate to the transport member to a placement location adjacent to the outfeed carrier surface and back to the engaging location, wherein the article stabilization member moves at a variable velocity from the engaging location to the placement location. 2. The article grouping system of claim 1 , wherein the article stabilization member engages with an article in the engaging location and disengages with the article in the placement location. 3. The article grouping system of claim 2 , wherein the article stabilization member disengages with the article in the placement location at substantially the same velocity as the outfeed carrier surface. 4. The article grouping system of claim 1 , wherein the engaging location is fixed. 5. The article grouping system of claim 1 , wherein the placement location is variably spaced from the engaging location. 6. The article grouping system of claim 1 , wherein the article stabilization member comprises a centering bell, wherein the centering bell has an interior surface that is shaped to substantially match a shape of a portion of an article. 7. The article grouping system of claim 1 , wherein the article stabilization member is movable in an X-direction and a Z-direction. 8. The article grouping system of claim 1 , wherein the transfer apparatus further comprises a second article stabilization member. 9. An article grouping system comprising: a grouping apparatus comprising a frame and a plurality of carriages operatively connected with the frame, each carriage is independently movable in a first direction about a closed travel path, wherein each carriage defines at least one article receiving compartment that is configured to receive an individual article in an article receiving zone; an outfeed carrier apparatus disposed adjacent to an article discharge zone of the grouping apparatus, wherein the outfeed carrier apparatus comprises an outfeed carrier surface that is movable in a second direction, the outfeed carrier apparatus is positioned adjacent to a portion of the grouping apparatus such that the carriage is movable from the article receiving zone to the article discharge zone adjacent to the outfeed carrier surface; and a transfer apparatus comprising: a frame; an article stabilizing member operatively connected with the frame, wherein the article stabilization member moves the one or more articles from the carriage onto the outfeed carrier surface while controlling the machine-directional position of the one or more articles and wherein the article stabilization member engages with an article in an engaging location and disengages with the article in a variable placement location, wherein the article stabilization member moves at a variable velocity from the engaging location to the placement location. 10. The article grouping system of claim 9 , wherein the article stabilization member disengages with the article in the placement location such that the article has a matched velocity with the outfeed carrier surface. 11. The article grouping system of claim 9 , wherein the engaging location is fixed. 12. The article grouping system of claim 9 , wherein the grouping apparatus is configured to stop two carriages in the article discharge zone and the article stabilization member is configured to move one or more articles from each of the two carriages onto the outfeed carrier surface. 13. The article grouping system of claim 9 , wherein the article stabilization member is movable in an X-direction and a Z-direction. 14. The article grouping system of claim 9 , wherein the transfer apparatus further comprises a second stabilization member. 15. An article grouping system comprising: a grouping apparatus comprising a first transport member and a second transport member, wherein the first and second transport members are movable in a first direction and are capable of transporting one or more articles; an outfeed carrier apparatus having an outfeed carrier surface that is movable in a second direction, wherein outfeed carrier apparatus is positioned proximate to a portion of the grouping apparatus; and a transfer apparatus comprising: a frame; a first article stabilization member operatively connected with the frame, a first transfer apparatus drive mechanism operatively connected with the first article stabilization member; a second article stabilization member operatively connected with the frame; a second transfer apparatus drive mechanism operatively connected with the second article stabilization member, a transfer apparatus control system, wherein the transfer apparatus control system causes the first transfer apparatus drive mechanism to move the first article stabilization member in such a way that the first article stabilization member is able to engage with one or more articles on the first transport member and move the one or more articles from the first transport member onto the outfeed carrier surface to form a first row of articles, and wherein the transfer apparatus control system causes the second transfer apparatus drive mechanism to move the second article stabilization member in such a way that the second article stabilization member is able to engage with one or more articles on the second transport member and to move the one or more articles from the second transport member onto the outfeed carrier surface at a predetermined spacing from the first row of articles to form an array of articles. 16. The article grouping system of claim 15 , wherein the first and second article stabilization members are each movable in an X-direction and a Z-direction. 17. The article grouping system of claim 15 , wherein the first and second transfer apparatus drive mechanisms move the first and second article stabilization members at a variable velocity from an engaging location adjacent to the grouping apparatus to a variable placement location adjacent to the outfeed carrier surface.
