Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present disclosure relates to arrangements for attaching an RFID tag to a liquid container, and particularly to a blood components container. The RFID tag may be inserted in an enclosure, such as peel tab, or in a sealed cup attached to a container port. The tag could alternately be embedded in a molded plug or component attached to a port. The RFID antenna could be painted or stamped on the surface of the container. Or the tag could be inserted into the container to float freely in the liquid components. The RFID source may be secured around the neck of a rigid or semi-rigid container, attached with a tether or attached to a connector assembled in association with a blood component or other fluid flow path.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A blood component container assembly including, a container body configured to contain blood component; a port of the container body configured to provide a fluid passage into the container body, the port comprising a first planar surface facing away from the container body and a neck protruding from the first planar surface in a first direction perpendicular to the first planar surface toward outside of the container body, wherein the neck comprises an annular column elongated in the first direction and a protrusion extending in a second direction parallel to the first planar surface; a connector mounted on the port, the connector comprising a structure inserted into the neck of the port and coupled to the annular column of the neck, the connector having a second planar surface facing the first planar surface of the port; and an RFID tag in form of an annular disk, the RFID tag comprising a central aperture and an annular portion surrounding the central aperture, wherein the planar annular RFID tag is interposed between the port and the connector such that the neck of the port passes through the central aperture and such that the annular portion forms an outer circumference of the RFID tag in a complete circle concentric with the central aperture when viewed in the first direction, such that the RFID tag is captured between the first planar surface and the protrusion of the neck by attachment of the second planar surface when the connector is mounted on the port. 2. The blood component container assembly of claim 1 in which the central aperture has a diameter, the neck has a diameter, the connector has a diameter, and the diameter of the central aperture is larger than that of the neck diameter and smaller than that of the connector. 3. The blood component container assembly of claim 1 in which the RFID tag extends generally annularly around the neck. 4. The blood component container assembly of claim 1 in which the RFID tag comprises a generally planar member carrying an RFID circuit. 5. The blood component container assembly of claim 1 in which the RFID tag comprises an RFID chip carried on the tag. 6. The blood component container assembly of claim 1 in which the RFID tag comprises a durable material selected from a group consisting of molded plastic and fiberboard. 7. The blood component container assembly of claim 1 in which the RFID tag comprises plastic and includes an RFID chip molded there within. 8. The blood component container assembly of claim 1 in which the RFID tag has a generally annulus or donut shape with an inner circular opening edge and an outer circular edge. 9. The blood component container assembly of claim 1 in which the blood component container is a plasma bottle.
