A Doppler gate is automatically positioned in spectral Doppler ultrasound imaging. Samples acquired for multiple PW Doppler gates are used for B-mode and/or F-mode detection over time without interleaving transmissions for the PW Doppler. The B-mode and/or F-mode information are used to track gate placement. Alternatively or additionally, characteristics spectra from different gate locations are used to select a gate location. Either tracking may be used to change the locations sampled and/or beam characteristics, such as centering the locations and beam focus on the selected gate location.

I claim: 1. A system for positioning a Doppler gate in spectral Doppler ultrasound imaging, the system comprising: a transmit beamformer configured to transmit beams including a first transmit beam and a second transmit beam subsequent to the first transmit beam; a receive beamformer configured to form a plurality of spaced apart receive beams in response to each of the transmit beams, each of the receive beams sampled at a plurality of depths, the sampling of the receive beams defining a sample region, the sample region responsive to the first transmit beam being a first sample region and the sample region responsive to the second transmit beam being a second sample region; and a processor configured to set a location of the Doppler gate as a function of a first sampling of the sampled receive beams responsive to the first transmit and in the first sample region not centered at the location, to control the transmit beamformer to center the second transmit beam on the location, and to control the receive beamformer to center the second sample region for the receive beams responsive to the second transmit beam on the location. 2. The system of claim 1 wherein the processor is configured to track the Doppler gate location with B-mode information. 3. The system of claim 2 further comprising a spectral Doppler processor configured to estimate a spectrum for the Doppler gate location from signals for the tracked Doppler gate location. 4. The system of claim 1 further comprising a display configured to display an image, the image being of a spectrum of signals at the Doppler gate. 5. The system of claim 1 wherein the processor is configured to repeat the setting and controlling. 6. The system of claim 1 wherein the transmit beamformer is configured to simultaneously transmit two of the beams from different apertures of a transducer array to laterally spaced apart scan lines and apply separate delay patterns to the different apertures. 7. The system of claim 1 wherein the processor is configured to control the transmit beamformer to center by setting a focus of the second transmit beam at the location. 8. The system of claim 1 wherein the processor is configured to control the receive beamformer to adjust a lateral and elevation position of the receive beams to the location of the Doppler gate. 9. The system of claim 1 wherein the processor is configured to control the receive beamformer to center a distribution of sample locations on the location of the Doppler gate. 10. The system of claim 1 further comprising: a B-mode detector configured to detect intensity from single samples of the sample region for each of different times, and a spectral Doppler processor configured to estimate a spectrum for the location from a plurality of the samples over time for that location, the plurality including the single samples. 11. The system of claim 1 wherein the processor is configured to determine a translation with a greatest similarity between B-mode information of different times for the sample region and set the location as shifted by the translation. 12. The system of claim 1 further comprising a display configured to display a spectral strip over time of spectra at the Doppler gate where the Doppler gate is at different tracked locations in the time. 13. The system of claim 1 further comprising a Doppler estimator configured to estimate F-mode information, and wherein the processor is configured to set as a function of the F-mode information. 14. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having stored therein data representing instructions executable by a programmed processor for positioning a Doppler gate in spectral Doppler ultrasound imaging, the storage medium comprising instructions for: receiving signals over time for each a plurality of spaced apart locations; setting a Doppler gate location to one of the spaced apart locations as a function of the signals; updating a distribution of the spaced apart locations as a function of the set Doppler gate location so that a center of the distribution is at the set Doppler gate location; and repeating the receiving with the distribution centered at the set Doppler gate location, repeating the setting to another Doppler gate location, and repeating the updating with the center of the distribution at the other Doppler gate location. 15. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 wherein receiving comprises receiving for a constellation of possible Doppler gate locations in response to multiple simultaneous transmit beams. 16. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 further comprising: updating a transmit beam position to be centered at the set Doppler gate location. 17. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 further comprising: detecting movement above a threshold; and initiating the setting in response to the movement above the threshold. 18. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 14 further comprising: generating B-mode information from pulse wave signals; tracking a region for the Doppler gate location with the B-mode information; and establishing the spaced apart locations based on the tracking. 19. A method for positioning a Doppler gate in spectral Doppler ultrasound imaging, the method comprising: receiving signals over time for each a plurality of spaced apart locations in a distribution over a region of a patient; setting a Doppler gate location to one of the spaced apart locations as a function of the signals, the one of the spaced apart locations being other than a center of the distribution; updating the distribution of the spaced apart locations so that the center of the distribution is at the set Doppler gate location; and repeating the receiving with the distribution centered at the set Doppler gate location.
