Official abstract text for this publication.
Customers receive advertisements or “impressions” related to brick and mortar merchants while accessing online content. The merchants or other entities track which impressions correlate with customers coming to a physical store and conducting a transaction (e.g., making a purchase) by comparing transaction information with information about the customer that is provided by the source of online impressions. In one implementation, the merchant creates a hash from the customer's name and account number on a payment card. This hash is compared with a hash from the impression provider that is generated using the same technique. When a match is found, it is inferred that exposure to the online impression caused the customer to make a purchase at the physical store. Merchants may pay the impression providers an advertising or referral fee based on the matches.

What is claimed is: 1. A system, comprising: one or more processors; and one or more computer-readable media storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform acts comprising: storing a plurality of tokens received from a plurality of impression providers, a token of the plurality of tokens being associated with an impression provider code for an impression provider of the plurality of impression providers that provided an online impression associated with a merchant to a user device, wherein the token includes at least information associated with a payment instrument; storing transaction data for a transaction conducted at a physical location of the merchant, the transaction data comprising information associated with a payment instrument used for the transaction; identifying a match between the information included in the token and the information associated with the payment instrument used for the transaction; and determining that the impression provider receives attribution for the transaction based at least in part on the match. 2. The system recited in claim 1 , wherein the transaction data further comprises an impression provider code provided during the transaction, and wherein the acts further comprising determining that the impression provider receives attribution for the transaction based at least in part on a comparison of the impression provider code provided during the transaction and the impression provider code associated with the token. 3. The system recited in claim 2 , the acts further comprising receiving, from a merchant device of the merchant, the impression provider code provided during the transaction. 4. The system recited in claim 1 , wherein: another token is associated with a timestamp indicating when the online impression was provided to an additional user device; the transaction data further comprises a transaction time of the transaction at the physical location of the merchant; and the acts further comprising disregarding another match based at least in part on a designated time period elapsing between the timestamp indicating when the online impression was provided to the additional user device and the transaction time of the transaction at the physical location of the merchant. 5. The system recited in claim 1 , wherein the transaction data further comprises a transaction value of the transaction at the physical location of the merchant, and wherein the acts further comprising determining a payment due from the merchant to the impression provider that receives the attribution for the transaction, an amount of the payment being based at least in part on the transaction value. 6. The system recited in claim 1 , the acts further comprising providing information to the impression provider and to the merchant in response to audit requests. 7. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the token is further associated with a timestamp indicating when the online impression was provided to the user device, and wherein the acts further comprising: determining that a designated time period between the timestamp and a time of the transaction has not elapsed, and wherein determining that the impression provider receives the attribution for the transaction is further based on determining that the designated time period has not elapsed.
