Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A lighting module is provided that includes a single-piece lens having an input surface including a plurality of near-field lens elements, and an exit surface, each element having a different focal length. The lighting module also includes light-emitting diode (LED) source positioned to direct incident light through the input surface. Further, the elements are configured to shape the light from the input surface into a collimated light pattern emanating from the exit surface containing at least 60% of the incident light.

What is claimed is: 1. A lighting module, comprising: a single-piece lens having an input surface including a plurality of near-field lens elements, and an exit surface, each element having a different focal length; and an LED source positioned to direct incident light through the input surface, wherein the elements are configured to shape the light from the input surface into a collimated light pattern emanating from the exit surface containing at least 60% of the incident light. 2. The lighting module according to claim 1 , wherein the light source and the exit surface of the lens collectively define a depth of approximately 50 millimeters or less. 3. The lighting module according to claim 1 , wherein the light source and the exit surface of the lens collectively define a depth of approximately 25 millimeters or less. 4. The lighting module according to claim 1 , wherein the exit surface of the lens comprises a plurality of optical elements configured to shape the collimated light pattern into a low-beam headlight pattern. 5. The lighting module according to claim 4 , wherein the collimated light pattern has a spread of 10 degrees or less. 6. The lighting module according to claim 1 , wherein the exit surface of the lens comprises a plurality of optical elements configured to shape the collimated light pattern into a high-beam headlight pattern. 7. The lighting module according to claim 6 , wherein the collimated light pattern has a spread of 10 degrees or less. 8. A lighting module, comprising: a lens having an input surface including a plurality of near-field lens elements, and an exit surface, at least one element having a unique focal length; and an LED source positioned to direct incident light through the input surface, wherein the elements are configured to shape the light from the input surface into a collimated light pattern emanating from the exit surface containing at least 60% of the incident light. 9. The lighting module according to claim 8 , wherein the light source and the exit surface of the lens collectively define a depth of approximately 50 millimeters or less. 10. The lighting module according to claim 8 , wherein the light source and the exit surface of the lens collectively define a depth of approximately 25 millimeters or less. 11. The lighting module according to claim 8 , wherein the exit surface of the lens is arranged in a substantially circular shape. 12. The lighting module according to claim 8 , wherein the exit surface of the lens is arranged in a substantially rectangular shape. 13. The lighting module according to claim 8 , wherein the exit surface of the lens comprises a plurality of optical elements configured to shape the collimated light pattern into a low-beam headlight pattern. 14. A lighting module, comprising: a single-piece lens having an input surface including a plurality of near-field lens elements, and an exit surface, at least one element having a unique focal length; and an LED source positioned to direct incident light through the input surface, wherein the elements are configured to shape the light from the input surface into a collimated light pattern emanating from the exit surface containing at least 60% of the incident light. 15. The lighting module according to claim 14 , wherein the light source and the exit surface of the lens collectively define a depth of approximately 50 millimeters or less. 16. The lighting module according to claim 14 , wherein the light source and the exit surface of the lens collectively define a depth of approximately 25 millimeters or less. 17. The lighting module according to claim 14 , wherein the exit surface of the lens comprises a plurality of optical elements configured to shape the collimated light pattern into a low-beam headlight pattern. 18. The lighting module according to claim 17 , wherein the collimated light pattern has a spread of 10 degrees or less. 19. The lighting module according to claim 14 , wherein the exit surface of the lens comprises a plurality of optical elements configured to shape the collimated light pattern into a high-beam headlight pattern. 20. The lighting module according to claim 19 , wherein the collimated light pattern has a spread of 10 degrees or less.
