A drill guide for drilling bone comprising a housing having a bore running through the housing is disclosed. In one embodiment, the drill guide may comprise a locking member coupled to the housing that is adapted to engage with a locking portion of a drill bit to lock the drill bit axially within the housing. The locking member may also be adapted to disengage with the drill bit to allow the drill bit to move within the bore of the housing and be inserted into bone. A movable guide may also be provided with the drill guide, such movable guide including a bore for receiving a portion of the drill bit and allowing the same to move axially within the housing. Methods of using the aforementioned drill guide are also disclosed.

The invention claimed is: 1. A system for piercing bone comprising: a guide having a housing with a proximal section and a distal section, the housing defining a bore extending through the housing from the proximal section towards the distal section, the bore having a longitudinal axis; a locking member coupled with the housing; a bone-piercing implement having a locking portion and a bone-piercing section with a cutting region adapted for cutting into bone, the locking portion being engageable and disengageable with the locking member, wherein the bone-piercing implement is locked in opposing directions relative to the housing along the longitudinal axis when the locking portion is engaged with the locking member and, when the locking portion is disengaged from the locking member, the bone-piercing implement is movable relative to the housing within the bore along the longitudinal axis, the distal section of the housing including an opening having a first diameter and the locking portion having a second diameter greater than the first diameter, such that the cutting region of the bone-piercing implement is adapted to pass through the opening but the locking portion is not; and a movable guide disposed within the bore of the housing, wherein the locking portion of the bone-piercing implement is movable within the bore relative to and distal of the locking member while the locking member is coupled with the housing, wherein a surface on the bone-piercing implement is engageable with a surface on the movable guide to move the movable guide axially relative to the housing within the bore in the housing, and wherein a projection separate and distinct from the locking portion and the locking member and extending from the moveable guide engages with a slot formed in the housing to prevent rotation of the movable guide relative to the housing. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the bone-piercing implement is a drill bit and the cutting region is located at a distal section of the drill bit. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the housing further includes an indicator configured to align with a portion of the guide to indicate when the bone-piercing implement is locked. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the locking member includes internal threads adapted to engage with corresponding threads on the locking portion of the bone-piercing implement, the bone-piercing implement being rotatable within the bore of the housing when its threaded locking portion is engaged with the threaded locking member, such that the bone-piercing implement is movable distally or proximally via the threading. 5. The system of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the bone-piercing implement is insertable through a bore formed in the movable guide. 6. The system of claim 5 , wherein a section of the housing is configured to engage with the movable guide to limit an insertion depth of the bone-piercing implement into bone. 7. The system of claim 1 , wherein a surface of the housing includes at least one indicator for measuring a depth to which the implement is inserted into bone. 8. The system of claim 1 further comprising a bone plate with an aperture, wherein the distal section of the housing includes an end that is engageable with the aperture. 9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the bone-piercing implement, its locking portion, and the movable guide are freely movable, in a reciprocating drilling motion, in conjunction with each other within the bore in the housing to a position past the proximal section and the locking member. 10. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a spring disposed within the bore in the housing, the spring being adapted to contact the movable guide, such that the spring is compressible within the bore in the housing upon movement of the movable guide relative to the housing. 11. A system for piercing bone comprising: a guide having a housing with a proximal section and a distal section, the housing defining a bore extending through the housing from the proximal section towards the distal section, the bore having a longitudinal axis; a locking member coupled with the housing; a bone-piercing implement having a locking portion and a bone-piercing section with a cutting region adapted for cutting into bone, the locking portion being engageable and disengageable with the locking member, wherein the bone-piercing implement is locked in opposing directions relative to the housing along the longitudinal axis when the locking portion is engaged with the locking member and, when the locking portion is disengaged from the locking member, the bone-piercing implement is movable relative to the housing within the bore along the longitudinal axis, the distal section of the housing having an opening sized to allow passage of the cutting region of the bone-piercing implement therethrough for cutting bone; and a movable guide disposed within the bore of the housing distal of the locking member, wherein the movable guide includes a bore extending therethrough sized to receive the bone-piercing implement, and wherein the bone-piercing implement is engageable with the movable guide when the locking portion is disengaged from the locking member and moved past the locking member, the bone-piercing implement, its locking portion, and the movable guide being freely movable, in a reciprocating drilling motion, in conjunction with each other within the bore in the housing to a position past the proximal section and the locking member, wherein a projection separate and distinct from the locking portion and the locking member and extending from the moveable guide engages with a slot formed in the housing to prevent rotation of the movable guide relative to the housing. 12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising a spring disposed within the bore in the housing, the spring being adapted to contact the movable guide, such that the spring is compressible within the bore in the housing upon movement of the movable guide relative to the housing. 13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the bone-piercing implement includes a region of increased dimension that is engageable with a portion of the movable guide, such that the movable guide is movable along the longitudinal axis relative to the housing within the bore in the housing while the bone-piercing implement is moved along the longitudinal axis. 14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the locking member includes internal threads adapted to engage with corresponding threads on the locking portion of the bone-piercing implement, the bone-piercing implement being rotatable within the bore of the housing when its threaded locking portion is engaged with the threaded locking member, such that the bone-piercing implement is movable distally or proximally via the threading. 15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the locking member is a separate piece that is engageable and disengageable with the housing. 16. The system of claim 11 further comprising a bone plate with an aperture, wherein the distal section of the housing includes an end that is engageable with the aperture. 17. A system for piercing bone comprising: a guide having a housing with a bore extending along a longitudinal axis of the housing; a locking member coupled with the housing; a bone-piercing implement having a locking portion and a bone-piercing section with a cutting region adapted for cutting into bone, the locking portion being engageable and disengageable with the locking member to selectively lock the bone-piercing implement in opposing directions relative to the housing along the longitudinal axis, w
