Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Time-based media is distributed and promoted in a social networking environment. Accounts of a social networking system author social media content items (SMCIs) from which a social networking system infers relevance of content to users of those accounts. Content distributors submit time-based media content to the social networking system, which creates distributor SMCIs containing the time-based media content. Accounts are identified to receive distributor SMCIs based on SMCIs previously authored by those accounts as well as identifying information and the subject of the SMCI. Content promoters may add promotional material to distributor SMCIs, which the social networking service sends to additional accounts.

What is claimed is: 1. A computer-implemented method for distributing time-based media (TBM) content through a social networking system, the method comprising: receiving a plurality of social media content items authored by a plurality of accounts of the social networking system, the social media content items comprising at least some text, the social networking system comprising identifying information associated with the accounts, one of the accounts being for a distributor of TBM content; receiving, from the distributor of TBM content and during a broadcast of TBM content having a time-based component, a TBM content reference referencing the TBM content currently being broadcast; forming a distributor social media content item comprising descriptive text, metadata identifying information associated with the distributor, and the TBM content reference; identifying, by at least one processor, a subset of accounts to receive the distributor social media content item, the subset identified based on the TBM content, the social media content items authored by accounts within the subset, the descriptive text, and the identifying information associated with each account of the subset; sending the distributor social media content item to the identified subset of accounts; receiving promotion information for the distributor social media content item from one or more content promoters; modifying the sent distributor social media content item to include the promotion information, the modified distributor social media content item identifying the distributor as an author; identifying a second subset of accounts to receive the modified distributor social media content item, the second subset identified based on the modified distributor social media content item, the social media content items, and the identifying information associated with each account; and sending the modified distributor social media content item to the second subset of accounts on behalf of the distributor. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifying information associated with the accounts comprises demographics and geographic location, and wherein identifying the second subset of accounts comprises selecting accounts for the second subset of accounts based on promoter preferences and the identifying information associated with each account. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein selecting the second subset of accounts comprises: inferring account demographics and a geographic location from the received plurality of social media content items authored by accounts within the plurality of accounts. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifying information associated with the accounts comprises account content preferences, wherein the plurality of accounts of the social networking system are connected to other accounts of the social networking system by a plurality of connections, and wherein identifying the second subset of accounts comprises: inferring account content preferences from the received social media content items and from the plurality of connections associated with each account; and selecting accounts for the second subset of accounts based on promoter preferences and the identifying information associated with each account. 5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving notification preferences from the one or more content promoters; and notifying the one or more content promoters about an opportunity to promote the distributor social media content item, the one or more content promoters being different entities than the distributor. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein notifying the one or more content promoters comprises: selecting the one or more content promoters based on the metadata in the distributor social media content item and the notification preferences received from the one or more content promoters; and granting the one or more content promoters access to add promoted content to the distributor social media content item. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: responsive to receiving the TBM content, storing the TBM content in a server of the social networking system; receiving a request for content from a particular account of the social networking system; and sending the stored TBM content to the particular account of the social networking system. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the TBM content comprises at least one selected from a group consisting of: a video segment of the currently broadcasting TBM content, an image from the currently broadcasting TBM content, an audio clip from the currently broadcasting TBM content, and interactive experiences associated with the currently broadcasting TBM content. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the metadata in the distributor social media content item comprises at least one selected from a group consisting of: TBM content type, TBM content genre, demographic data, distribution timing, distribution locations, distribution channels, descriptive tags, and an affiliation with an account of the social networking system. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the promotional information received from the content promoter comprises an advertisement, a text description, a text title, and a logo. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein sending the modified distributor social media content item comprises sending the modified distributor social media content item as a push notification. 12. A computer-implemented method for distributing time-based media (TBM) content through a social networking system, the method comprising: receiving a plurality of social media content items authored by a plurality of accounts of the social networking system, the social networking system comprising identifying information associated with the accounts, one of the accounts being for a distributor of TBM content; receiving, from the distributor of TBM content and during a broadcast of TBM content having a time-based component, a TBM content reference referencing the TBM content currently being broadcast; forming a distributor social media content item comprising metadata of the distributor, and the TBM content reference; identifying, by at least one computer processor, a subset of accounts to receive the distributor social media content item, the subset identified based on the TBM content, the social media content items authored by accounts within the subset, and the identifying information associated with the accounts of the subset; sending the distributor social media content item to the identified subset of accounts; receiving promotion information associated with the distributor social media content item from one or more content promoters; modifying the distributor social media content item to include the promotion information; identifying a second subset of accounts to receive the modified distributor social media content item, the second subset identified based on the modified distributor social media content item, the social media content items, and the identifying information associated with each account; and sending the modified distributor social media content item to the second subset of accounts on behalf of the distributor. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein identifying the second subset of accounts comprises selecting accounts for the second subset of accounts based on promoter preferences and the identifying information associated with each account. 14. A computer-readable medium comprising instructions, that, when executed, cause one or more processors of a device to: receive a plurality of social media content items authored by a plurality of accounts of the so
