Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An adaptive fluid system for an article of footwear is disclosed. The adaptive fluid system includes a fluid chamber that provides cushioning and shock absorption for a foot. The adaptive fluid system includes an adjustable pressure regulating valve that may be used to control the pressure of the fluid chamber. The adaptive fluid system includes a valve that prevents fluid from escaping from a fluid chamber during use.

What is claimed is: 1. An adaptive fluid system for an article of footwear, comprising: a fluid chamber disposed in a portion of the article of footwear; a pump configured to deliver fluid to the fluid chamber; an adjustable pressure regulating valve disposed in the article of footwear, the adjustable pressure regulating valve having an adjustable maximum pressure setting; the adjustable pressure regulating valve including a fluid inlet disposed downstream of the pump and a fluid outlet disposed upstream of the fluid chamber; a one way valve disposed between the fluid outlet of the adjustable pressure regulating valve and a fluid inlet of the fluid chamber; and wherein the one way valve allows fluid flow from the adjustable pressure regulating valve to the fluid chamber and wherein the one way valve prevents fluid flow from the fluid chamber to the adjustable pressure regulating valve. 2. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 1 , wherein the pump is an internal pump disposed in the article of footwear. 3. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 2 , wherein the pump is disposed in an insole of the article of footwear. 4. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 3 , wherein the pump is positioned for activation by application of pressure from a foot of a user of the article of footwear during walking or running. 5. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 1 , wherein a portion of the adjustable pressure regulating valve is exposed on an outer portion of the article of footwear and wherein the portion can be adjusted to change the adjustable maximum pressure setting of the adjustable pressure regulating valve. 6. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 1 , wherein the adjustable pressure regulating valve comprises a ball and a spring arranged such that, upon pressure in a fluid line connecting the pump and the fluid chamber exceeding a pressure corresponding to the adjustable maximum pressure setting, the ball is movable to allow release of fluid from the fluid system. 7. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 1 , wherein the pump is connected on a first side to a fluid line arranged receive air from outside the article of footwear and on a second side to a fluid line arranged to transfer air from the pump to the fluid chamber. 8. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 1 , wherein the fluid chamber is in fluid communication with a manual release valve. 9. The adaptive fluid system according to claimer 8 , wherein the manual release valve is spaced apart from the fluid chamber. 10. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 1 , wherein the fluid chamber is disposed in a midsole of a sole structure of the article of footwear. 11. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 3 , wherein the pump is located in a toe region of the article of footwear. 12. An adaptive fluid system for an article of footwear, comprising: a fluid chamber disposed in a portion of the article of footwear; an internal pump configured to deliver fluid to the fluid chamber, the internal pump being disposed in the article of footwear; an adjustable pressure regulating valve disposed in the article of footwear, the adjustable pressure regulating valve having an adjustable maximum pressure setting; the adjustable pressure regulating valve including a fluid inlet disposed downstream of the internal pump and a fluid outlet disposed upstream of the fluid chamber; a first one way valve disposed between the internal pump and the fluid inlet of the adjustable pressure regulating valve and a second one way valve is disposed between the fluid outlet of the adjustable pressure regulating valve and the fluid chamber; wherein the first one way valve allows fluid flow from the internal pump to the adjustable pressure regulating valve and wherein the first one way valve prevents fluid flow from the adjustable pressure regulating valve to the internal pump; and wherein the second one way valve allows fluid flow from the adjustable pressure regulating valve to the fluid chamber, and wherein the second one way valve prevents fluid flow from the fluid chamber to the adjustable pressure regulating valve. 13. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 12 , wherein a portion of the adjustable pressure regulating valve is exposed on an outer portion of the article of footwear and wherein the portion can be adjusted to change the adjustable maximum pressure setting of the adjustable pressure regulating valve. 14. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 12 , wherein a manual release valve is disposed downstream of the fluid chamber. 15. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 12 , wherein the article of footwear includes a filter assembly that is in fluid communication with the internal pump. 16. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 15 , wherein the filter assembly is disposed on an outer portion the article of footwear. 17. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 12 , wherein the fluid chamber is disposed in a sole structure of the article of footwear. 18. The adaptive fluid system according to claim 12 , wherein the pump is located in a toe region of an insole of the article of footwear. 19. An article of footwear comprising: an upper; a sole structure; and an adaptive fluid system, the adaptive fluid system including a fluid chamber disposed in a portion of the article of footwear, a pump configured to deliver fluid to the fluid chamber, an adjustable pressure regulating valve disposed in the article of footwear, and a one way valve, and wherein the adjustable pressure regulating valve has an adjustable maximum pressure setting, the adjustable pressure regulating valve includes a fluid inlet disposed downstream of the pump and a fluid outlet disposed upstream of the fluid chamber, the one way valve is disposed between the fluid outlet of the adjustable pressure regulating valve and a fluid inlet of the fluid chamber, and the one way valve allows fluid flow from the adjustable pressure regulating valve to the fluid chamber and the one way valve prevents fluid flow from the fluid chamber to the adjustable pressure regulating valve. 20. The article of footwear of claim 19 , wherein the pump is an internal pump disposed in a toe region of an insole of the article of footwear. 21. The article of footwear of claim 19 , wherein a portion of the adjustable pressure regulating valve is exposed on an outer portion of the article of footwear and wherein the portion can be adjusted to change the adjustable maximum pressure setting of the adjustable pressure regulating valve. 22. The article of footwear of claim 19 , further comprising a manual release valve disposed downstream of the fluid chamber.
