A system includes a host computer, a processor, and a haptic peripheral. The haptic peripheral includes a manipulandum movable in at least one degree of freedom, an inertial haptic output device, and a haptic output device. The inertial haptic output device is coupled to the manipulandum, and is configured to receive a control signal from the processor and output a transient haptic effect to the manipulandum in response to the control signal from the processor. The haptic output device is configured to receive a control signal from the processor and modify the stiffness of the manipulandum in response to the control signal from the processor.

What is claimed is: 1. An apparatus comprising: a manipulandum movable in at least one degree of freedom; an adjustable bumper positioned adjacent a surface of the manipulandum; and a haptic output device mechanically coupled to the adjustable bumper, wherein the haptic output device is configured to receive a control signal from a processor and is configured to move, thereby moving the adjustable bumper relative to the surface of the manipulandum in order to modify a stiffness of the manipulandum in response to the control signal from the processor. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the stiffness of the manipulandum is modified by changing the amount of contact between the adjustable bumper and the manipulandum. 3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the adjustable bumper is deformable. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a track coupled to the adjustable bumper, wherein the haptic output device is configured to move the track, thereby moving the adjustable bumper. 5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the haptic output device includes a gear with gear teeth and the track includes track teeth configured mesh with the gear teeth such that rotation of the gear moves the track such that the adjustable bumper moves towards or away from the surface of the manipulandum in order to change the stiffness of the manipulandum. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a track coupled to the adjustable bumper, wherein the haptic output device is configured to move the adjustable bumper along the track to move the adjustable bumper towards or away from the surface of the manipulandum in order to change the stiffness of the manipulandum. 7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the manipulandum is selected from the group consisting of a trigger and a joystick. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the manipulandum is configured to send a signal to the processor. 9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an inertial haptic output device coupled to the manipulandum, wherein the inertial haptic output device is configured to receive a control signal from the processor and output a haptic effect to the manipulandum in response to the control signal from the processor. 10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the haptic effect output by the inertial haptic output device is a transient effect selected from the group consisting of a vibration or a detent. 11. A gaming system comprising: a host computer; a processor; and a haptic peripheral including a manipulandum movable in at least one degree of freedom, an inertial haptic output device, and a haptic output device, wherein the inertial haptic output device is coupled to the manipulandum and is configured to receive a control signal from the processor and output a transient haptic effect to the manipulandum in response to the control signal from the processor, and wherein the haptic output device is configured to receive a control signal from the processor and modify a stiffness of the manipulandum in response to the control signal from the processor, wherein the haptic output device is coupled to a bumper disposed adjacent a surface of the manipulandum, wherein the haptic output device and bumper are mechanically coupled such that the haptic output device moves in response to the control signal, thereby causing the bumper to move towards or away from the surface of the manipulandum to modify the stiffness of the manipulandum. 12. The gaming system of claim 11 , further comprising a track coupled to the bumper, wherein the haptic output device is configured to move the track, thereby moving the bumper. 13. The gaming system of claim 12 , wherein the haptic output device includes a gear with gear teeth and the track includes track teeth configured to mesh with the gear teeth such that rotation of the gear moves the track such that the bumper moves towards or away from the surface of the manipulandum. 14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the manipulandum is selected from the group consisting of a trigger and a joystick. 15. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising a track coupled to the bumper, wherein the haptic output device is configured to move the bumper along the track to move the bumper towards or away from the surface of the manipulandum in order to modify the stiffness of the manipulandum. 16. A method of providing haptic feedback, comprising the steps of: receiving a first control signal at a haptic peripheral, wherein the haptic peripheral includes a manipulandum movable in at least one degree of freedom and a haptic output device; transmitting the first control signal to the haptic output device; and modifying a stiffness of the manipulandum in response to the first control signal by moving a bumper positioned adjacent a surface of the manipulandum towards or away from the surface, wherein the haptic output device is mechanically coupled to the bumper such that haptic output device moves in response to the first control signal and the bumper moves in response to the haptic output device moving. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein receiving the haptic signal further comprises determining a spring force amount. 18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the haptic output device is mechanically coupled to the bumper via a gear and a track, and wherein the step of modifying the stiffness of the manipulandum includes rotating the gear to move the track. 19.
