A robotic carton unloader for automatic unloading of cartons from a carton pile. In various embodiments, a robotic carton unloader may comprise a mobile body, a movable robotic arm attached to the mobile body and comprising an end effector configured to unload a row of cartons in a side-by-side orientation from the carton pile, and a conveyor system mounted on the mobile body and configured to receive the row of cartons from the end effector in the side-by-side orientation. In various embodiments the conveyor system may comprise a front-end descrambler and a central descrambler coupled to the front-end descrambler. In various embodiments, the robotic arm may be configured to straddle at least a portion of the mobile body and at least a portion of the conveyor system such that the conveyor system conveys cartons from the carton pile through the robotic arm.

What is claimed is: 1. A robotic carton unloader for unloading a carton pile resting on a floor, comprising: a mobile body having a front and a rear and sides and movable across the floor; a conveyor mounted on the mobile body to convey unloaded cartons thereon; and a straddling robotic arm having a base secured to the mobile body with the movable robotic arm movably pivotally attached to each vertical side of the base to define a horizontal axis perpendicular to the vertical sides and parallel to the front of the vehicle, the robotic arm extending therefrom pivotally movable in an arcuate path around the horizontal axis with the conveyor and unloaded cartons conveyed thereon passing between arcuately movable portions of the straddling robotic arm, wherein the straddling robotic arm further comprises a distal end movable with the straddling robotic arm to unload cartons from the carton pile and to place and release the unloaded cartons onto the conveyor when the distal end of the straddling robotic arm is above a conveying surface of the conveyor, and wherein an over the center counterbalance connects between the vertical side of the base and the pivotally movable robotic arm for counterbalancing the straddling robotic arm robotic arm when the straddling robotic arm is extending towards the carton pile and away from the carton pile. 2. The robotic carton unloader of claim 1 , wherein the movable portions of the straddling robot arm straddle each side of the conveyor. 3. The robotic carton unloader of claim 2 , wherein the conveyor extends side-to-side between the straddling robotic arms to maximize a width thereof. 4. The robotic carton unloader of claim 1 , wherein a first portion of the straddling robotic arm pivotally attaches to the mobile body below the conveyor. 5. The robotic carton unloader of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the straddling robotic arm is configured to move side to side relative to the mobile body to access the carton pile. 6. The robotic carton unloader of claim 5 , wherein the straddling robotic arm further comprises a linear actuator to move the portion of the robotic arm side to side. 7. The robotic carton unloader of claim 1 , wherein the straddling robotic arm is configured to pivot about at least one axis parallel to a front of the mobile body while moving towards and away from the carton pile. 8. The robotic carton unloader of claim 1 , wherein when the robotic carton unloader is positioned in front of the carton pile, the straddling robotic arm is configured to unload any carton from the carton pile with the distal end without moving the mobile body. 9. The robotic carton unloader of claim 1 , wherein the counterbalance is a spring. 10. The robotic carton unloader of claim 1 , wherein the counterbalance is a gas spring. 11. The robotic carton unloader of claim 1 , wherein: the straddling robotic arm is configured to move between a first position, a second position aligned, and a third position such that: the counterbalance is in a first resistance condition when the robotic arm is in the first position; the counterbalance is in a neutral resistance condition when the robotic arm is in the second position; and the counterbalance is in a second resistance condition when the robotic arm is in the third position. 12. The robotic carton unloader of claim 1 , wherein the conveyor comprises: a front-end descrambler; and a central descrambler coupled to the front-end descrambler.
