Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A surgical sagittal saw blade that includes a guide bar to which a blade head is pivotally mounted. Side edges extend between the opposed proximal and distal ends of the guide bar. A blade is pivotally mounted to the guide bar. The blade includes a base disposed in the guide bar. The blade has a head that extends outwardly from the base. A head extends from the base. The head extends outwardly from one of the side edges of the blade bar. Drive rods that extend from the base are reciprocated. The reciprocation of the drive rods results in the oscillation of the blade, including the blade head, around a pivot point.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A blade assembly for attachment to a surgical sagittal saw, the saw having a moveable driver, said blade assembly having: a guide bar having: opposed proximal and distal ends, the proximal end being shaped to be received by the saw and to cooperate with a saw fastening unit so that the fastening unit releasably holds said guide bar in a static state to the saw, the distal end of said guide bar having a thickness; and opposed side edges that extend between the proximal and distal ends of said guide bar; a blade including: a base at least partially disposed inside said guide bar that is pivotally mounted to said guide bar adjacent the distal end of said guide bar; and a head integral with said base that extends outwardly from a side edge of said guide bar so as to be located outside of said guide bar adjacent the side edge, said blade head having a thickness at least equal to the thickness of the distal end of said guide bar and said blade head having teeth; and two drive rods that are connected to and that extend proximally away from said blade base, said drive rods being connected to said blade on opposed sides of a pivot point internal to said guide bar around which said blade pivots, each said drive rod having a proximal end and a coupling feature that releasably couples said drive rods to the saw driver so that the actuation of the driver results in the simultaneous opposed reciprocation of said drive rods so that said drive rods oscillate said blade about the pivot point. 2. The blade assembly of claim 1 , wherein said drive rods are at least partially seated in said guide bar so as to be able to reciprocate within said guide bar and said guide bar is formed with at least one opening in which the proximal ends of said drive rods are located. 3. The blade assembly of claim 1 , wherein: said drive rods are at least partially seated in said guide bar so as to be able to reciprocate within said guide bar; and said guide bar is formed with an opening, the opening located between locations within said guide bar in which said drive rods are seated. 4. The blade assembly of claim 1 , wherein said blade and said drive rods are separate components and said drive rods are pivotally mounted to said blade. 5. The blade assembly of claim 1 , wherein: a pivot pin is disposed in said guide bar; and said blade base is seated against said pivot pin and said pivot pin defines the pivot point around which said blade oscillates. 6. The blade assembly of claim 1 , wherein: said guide bar is formed with a static pin; and a flexible tail extends from said blade base and said tail is mounted to said guide bar static pin. 7. The blade assembly of claim 1 , wherein each said drive rod is provided with a separate one of said coupling features that couples said drive rod to the saw driver. 8. The blade assembly of claim 1 , wherein: said guide bar includes two opposed bars that are secured together and said drive rods are at least partially located between said opposed bars; a pivot pin separate from said opposed bars is located between said opposed bars and is secured to at least one of said opposed bars; and said blade base is seated against said pivot pin and said pivot pin defines the pivot point around which said blade oscillates. 9. A blade assembly for attachment to a surgical sagittal saw, the saw having a moveable driver, said blade assembly having: a guide bar having: opposed proximal and distal ends, the proximal end being shaped to be received by the saw, the distal end of said guide bar having a thickness; and opposed side edges that extend between the proximal and distal ends; a blade including: a base at least partially disposed inside said guide bar that is pivotally mounted to said guide bar adjacent the distal end of said guide bar; and a head integral with said base located outside of said guide bar so as to extend outwardly from one of the side edges of said guide bar, said head having teeth, and said head having a thickness at least equal to the thickness of the distal end of said guide bar; and two drive rods that are connected to and that extend proximally away from said blade, said drive rods being connected to said blade on opposed sides of a pivot point around which said blade pivots, each said drive rod having a proximal end and a coupling feature that releasably couples said drive rods to the saw driver so that the actuation of the saw driver results in the simultaneous opposed reciprocation of said drive rods so that said drive rods oscillate said blade about the pivot point, said drive rods being at least partially located in said guide bar and being able to reciprocate in said guide bar wherein, said guide bar is formed with: at least one first opening adjacent the proximal end of said guide bar, said at least one first opening being located between said drive rods and shaped to receive a fastening element that holds said guide bar in a static state to the saw; and at least one second opening adjacent the proximal end of said guide bar, said at least one second opening being separate from the at least one first opening, wherein said drive rod coupling feature is located in the guide bar at least one second opening. 10. The blade assembly of claim 9 , wherein: each said drive rod includes a separate said coupling feature; and said guide bar is formed with two said second openings, each said drive rod coupling feature being located in a separate one of the guide bar second openings. 11. The blade assembly of claim 9 , wherein: said guide bar is formed with two second openings, each second opening being a cutout that extends inwardly from a separate one of said guide bar side edges; and each said drive rod has a separate said coupling feature, each said coupling feature being located in a separate one of the guide bar second openings. 12. The blade assembly of claim 9 , wherein said blade and said drive rods are separate components and said drive rods are pivotally mounted to said blade. 13. The blade assembly of claim 9 , wherein: a pivot pin is disposed in said guide bar; and said blade base is seated against said pivot pin and said pivot pin defines the pivot point around which said blade oscillates. 14. A blade assembly for attachment to a surgical sagittal saw, the saw having a moveable driver, said blade assembly having: a guide bar having proximal and distal ends and side edges that extend proximally from the distal end wherein, the proximal end is shaped to be received by the saw and to cooperate with a fastening unit so that the fastening unit releasably holds said guide bar in a static state to the saw and the distal end has a thickness; a blade including: a base at least partially disposed inside said guide bar that is pivotally mounted to said guide bar adjacent the distal end of said guide bar; and a head integral with said base that extends outwardly from one of the side edges of said guide bar, said head being formed with teeth, said teeth having a thickness at least equal to the thickness of the distal end of said guide bar; and two drive rods that are connected to and that extend proximally away from said blade, said drive rods being connected to said blade on opposed sides of a pivot point around which said blade pivots, each said drive rod having a proximal end and a coupling feature that releasably couples said drive rods to the saw driver so that the actuation of the driver results in the simultaneous opposed reciprocation of said drive rods so that said drive rods oscillate said blade about the pivot point, said coupling feature being shaped to releasably enga
