Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods and systems are provided for communication between moving objects (e.g., a train) and land-based systems (e.g., base stations of mobile wireless networks). For example, wireless communication may be established between a train and one or more base stations arranged along a track travelled by the train. In some instances, multiple-input and multiple-output arrays may be configured, comprising antennas of one or more communication relays arranged on the train, and the one or more base stations. Communications may be performed concurrently via multiple communication channels, such as channels of a MIMO arrays, using cooperative communication schemes for example. Channel state information (CSI) may be stored, remotely or locally, such as in a data storage system, and for communicating via the communication channel(s), channel state information may be determined, such as depending on information defining the current location of communication relays used in establishing the channels.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for providing wireless communication between a train and one or more base stations arranged along or near a track travelled by the train, the method comprising: setting up one or more communication channels, using one or more antennas of one or more of a plurality of communication relays arranged on the train and one or more antennas of the one or more base stations; determining and storing channel related data, wherein: the channel related data is determined for one of the plurality of communication relays and then reused for at least another one of the plurality of communication relays, and channel related data determined for a communication relay arranged in a front position in a moving direction of the train is propagated to one or more other communication relays arranged further back on the train; and using the channel related data for communicating via the one or more communication channels, based on information defining a current location of the plurality of communication relays with relation to the track travelled by the train. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the channel related data comprises channel state information (CSI). 3. The method of claim 1 , comprising establishing one or more virtual multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) arrays, wherein each virtual MIMO array comprises at least two of the plurality of communication relays arranged on the train and at least one of the one or more base stations. 4. The method of claim 3 , comprising communicating concurrently via multiple communication channels of at least one virtual MIMO array, using one or more cooperative communication schemes, wherein each communication channel is set up between one of the plurality of communication relays and at least one of the one or more base stations. 5. The method of one of claim 1 , comprising determining the channel related data by: performing a channel related data measurement in the communication relay arranged in the front position in the moving direction of the train, or performing a channel related data measurement in a base station associated with a communication channel setup using the communication relay arranged in the front position in the moving direction of the train. 6. The method of claim 1 , comprising determining the channel related data used for communicating via the one or more communication channels based on information about speed of the train and/or information about relative positions of the plurality of communication relays. 7. The method of claim 1 , comprising communicating via the one or more communication channels using one or more cooperative communication schemes. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the one or more cooperative communication schemes comprise: implementing spatial diversity by transmitting concurrently an identical signal on all the one or more communication channels, and/or implementing spatial multiplexing by transmitting segments of the signal via different ones of the one or more communication channels. 9. The method of claim 1 , comprising transmitting from the train to at least one of the one or more base stations one or more of: the channel related data, information about the speed of the train, and information about relative positions of the plurality of communication relays on the train. 10. The method of claim 1 , comprising arranging the plurality of communication relays on the train such that each communication relay travels through a same path in space when the train travels on the track. 11. A system for providing wireless communication between a train and one or more base stations arranged along or near a track travelled by the train, the system comprising: a plurality of communication relays for arrangement on the train; a communication unit that is operable to connect to the plurality of communication relays via one or more communication links, the communication unit is operable to set up one or more communication channels between one or more antennas of one or more of the plurality of communication relays and one or more antennas of the one or more base stations; a channel estimator that is operable to determine and store, in a data store, channel related data, wherein: the channel related data is determined for one of the plurality of communication relays and then reused for at least another one of the plurality of communication relays, and channel related data determined for a communication relay arranged in a front position in a moving direction of the train is propagated to one or more other communication relays arranged further back on the train; and wherein the communication unit is operable to communicate via the one or more communication channels, using the channel related data, based on information defining a current location of the plurality of communication relays with relation to the track travelled by the train. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the channel related data comprises channel state information (CSI). 13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the communication unit is operable to establish one or more virtual multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) arrays, wherein each virtual MIMO array comprises at least two of the plurality of communication relays and at least one of the one or more base stations. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the communication unit is operable to communicate concurrently via multiple communication channels of at least one virtual MIMO array, using one or more cooperative communication schemes, wherein each communication channel is set up between one of the plurality of communication relays and at least one of the one or more base stations. 15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the channel estimator is operable to determine the channel related data by: performing a channel related data measurement in a communication relay arranged in the front position in the moving direction of the train, or performing a channel related data measurement in a base station associated with a communication channel setup using the communication relay arranged in the front position in the moving direction of the train. 16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the channel estimator is operable to determine the channel related data used for communicating via the one or more communication channels based on information about speed of the train and/or information about relative positions of the plurality of communication relays. 17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the communication unit is operable to communicate via the one or more communication channels using one or more cooperative communication schemes. 18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the one or more cooperative communication schemes comprise: implementing spatial diversity by transmitting concurrently an identical signal on all the one or more communication channels, and/or implementing spatial multiplexing by transmitting segments of the signal via different ones of the one or more communication channels. 19.
