A person support apparatus includes a frame and a support surface cooperating with the frame to support a person. The person support apparatus also has a sensor coupled to one of the frame and the support surface. The sensor detects at least one characteristic associated with the person. A controller is coupled to the sensor. In response to at least one of a condition of the frame, a condition of the support surface, a position of the person, or a condition of the person, the controller operates to control the sensor by at least one of changing a gain of the sensor and changing a manner in which a signal from the sensor is filtered. In some instances, the controller turns the sensor off.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method of adjusting at least one function of a person support apparatus, the method comprising: sensing an initial position of a person with respect to the person support apparatus with at least one of a first sensor and a second sensor; sensing a second position of the person with respect to the person support apparatus with at least one of the first sensor and the second sensor; comparing the initial position with the second position; and adjusting the sensitivity of at least one adjustable sensor in response to the movement of the person from the initial position to the second position; wherein the first sensor, the second sensor, and the at least one adjustable sensor are different types of sensors such that one of the first sensor, the second sensor, and the at least one adjustable sensor is a force sensor; another of the first sensor, the second sensor, and the at least one adjustable sensor is a pneumatic pressure sensor; and yet another of the first sensor, the second sensor, and the at least one adjustable sensor is a physiological sensor. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the sensitivity of the at least one adjustable sensor occurs if comparing the initial position with the second position indicates a threshold amount of movement of the person. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjustable sensor includes at least one of the first sensor and the second sensor. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first sensor and the second sensor are coupled to a bed frame of the person support apparatus. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first sensor and the second sensor are coupled to a person support surface of the person support apparatus. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjustable sensor is coupled to a bed frame of the person support apparatus. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjustable sensor is coupled to a person support surface of the person support apparatus. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sensing a physiological characteristic of the person using the at least one adjustable sensor. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the physiological characteristic comprises the person's weight, heart rate, respiration rate or temperature. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the sensitivity of the at least one adjustable sensor comprises turning the at least one adjustable sensor on or off. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the sensitivity of the at least one adjustable sensor comprises changing a gain of the at least one adjustable sensor. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the sensitivity of the at least one adjustable sensor comprises changing a manner in which a signal to or from the at least one adjustable sensor is filtered. 13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjustable sensor comprises a plurality of adjustable sensors and wherein adjusting the sensitivity of the plurality of adjustable sensors comprises changing a gain of each of the plurality of adjustable sensors or changing a manner in which signals to or from each of the plurality of adjustable sensors is filtered. 14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjustable sensor comprises a plurality of adjustable sensors and wherein adjusting the sensitivity of the plurality of adjustable sensors comprises turning off some of the plurality of adjustable sensors and turning on others of the plurality of adjustable sensors. 15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising determining which of the plurality of adjustable sensors to turn on and which of the plurality of adjustable sensors to turn off is dependent upon whether the person is in the initial position or the second position. 16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor comprises a force sensing load cell or a pressure sensing strip. 17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor comprises a force sensing load cell or a pressure sensing strip. 18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising filtering noise associated with at least one electric component associated with the person support apparatus. 19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising filtering noise associated with separate medical equipment in a person's room based on information received from an electronic medical record's (EMR) system. 20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising posting information pertaining to the at least one adjustable sensor to a network.
