A distributed acoustic wave detection system and method is provided. The system may include a fiber optic cable deployed in a well and configured to react to pressure changes resulting from a propagating acoustic wave and an optical source configured to launch interrogating pulses into the fiber optic cable. In addition, the system may include a receiver configured to detect coherent Rayleigh noise produced in response to the interrogating pulses. The CRN signal may be used to track the propagation of the acoustic waves in the well. Such capability allows the location of the cement sheath, as well as measuring the bonding of cement to at least a casing string at least partially surrounded by a cement sheath.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for locating a cement sheath in a cased wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation, the wellbore having a wellhead and a casing string, comprising: (i) deploying an acoustic wave detection apparatus in the wellbore comprising: (a) a fiber optic cable disposed along the wellbore and configured to react to pressure changes resulting from an acoustic wave propagating along the wellbore; (b) an optical source to launch an optical pulse into the fiber optic cable; and (c) a data acquisition system coupled to the fiber optic cable to detect coherent Rayleigh noise (CRN) produced in response to the optical pulse and to track propagation of the guided acoustic wave along the elongate structure based on the detected CRN; (ii) producing a compressional wave in a casing string with an acoustic source such that the compressional wave travels along the casing string for reception of the passage of the compressional wave by the fiber optic cable; and (iii) measuring the attenuation of the compressional wave as the wave travels along the casing string. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprising determining a location of the acoustic wave along the casing string with the data acquisition system based on the detected CRN. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the method further comprising determining a velocity of the acoustic wave as it propagates along the casing string with the data acquisition system based on the detected CRN. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprising determining an attenuation of the acoustic wave with the data acquisition system based on the detected CRN, wherein the attenuation is indicative of characteristics of a medium surrounding the casing string. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the deploying of the acoustic wave detection apparatus further comprises deploying an array of discrete optical sensors for the fiber optic cable. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises configuring the optical source to launch a plurality of optical pulses at a plurality of optical frequencies. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic source is located inside the wellbore. 8. A method for logging a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation, wherein the wellbore has a wellhead and the logging comprises measuring the bonding of cement to at least a casing string at least partially surrounded by a cement sheath, comprising: (i) deploying an acoustic wave detection apparatus in the wellbore comprising: (a) a fiber optic cable disposed along the wellbore and configured to react to pressure changes resulting from an acoustic wave propagating along the wellbore; (b) an optical source to launch an optical pulse into the fiber optic cable; and (c) a data acquisition system coupled to the fiber optic cable to detect coherent Rayleigh noise (CRN) produced in response to the optical pulse and to track propagation of the guided acoustic wave along the elongate structure based on the detected CRN; (ii) producing a compressional wave in a casing string with an acoustic source such that the compressional wave travels along the casing string for reception of the passage of the compressional wave by the fiber optic cable; and (iii) measuring the attenuation of the compressional wave as the wave travels along the casing string. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the method further comprising determining a location of the acoustic wave along the casing string with the data acquisition system based on the detected CRN. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprising determining a velocity of the acoustic wave as it propagates along the casing string with the data acquisition system based on the detected CRN. 11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the method further comprising determining an attenuation of the acoustic wave with the data acquisition system based on the detected CRN, wherein the attenuation is indicative of characteristics of a medium surrounding the casing string. 12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the deploying of the acoustic wave detection apparatus further comprises deploying an array of discrete optical sensors for the fiber optic cable. 13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the method further comprises configuring the optical source to launch a plurality of optical pulses at a plurality of optical frequencies. 14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the acoustic source is located inside the wellbore.
